Situation:

Tens of thousands of people were feared dead yesterday after a tsunami triggered by one of the biggest earthquakes in history hit Japan. Ships, buildings and cars were swept away as monster 33ft waves smashed into the port city of Sendai. The 8.9 magnitude quake sparked a nuclear emergency when it shut down the cooling systems at the country’s largest atomic plant. Experts were last night battling to stop radiation leaks as 6,000 people were evacuated and US jets flew in chemicals to avert a disaster. Amid the desolation, more than 300 bodies washed up when the catastrophic flood waters retreated. But Japanese authorities said 80,000 people are missing and fear the death toll will rise dramatically in the coming days. Hundreds of fires continued to burn last night in Kesennuma, a coastal town of 70,000 people, with little hope of being put out. A boat carrying 80 dock workers was swept away in the 500mph tidal wave. A cruise ship with 100 passengers is also thought to be missing. Two bullet trains were picked up and thrown from the tracks like toys, one of them with 400 passengers which was still missing last night. As entire communities remained cut off, one emergency worker said: “We witnessed biblical scenes. “Huge container ships were tossed around like matchsticks. There was nothing anyone could do.” The quake is the sixth largest of all time and the worst to hit Japan. Capital Tokyo survived it relatively unscathed. But one million residents in the north eastern city of Sendai watched in horror as the mammoth wall of water struck without warning. Witnesses said there was an eerie silence “like the world had stopped” seconds before the quake hit. Thousands of people were forced to run for their lives as killer waves full of mud and debris swallowed neighbourhoods. Desperate drivers tried to outrun the water in their cars. Bridges were swept away and a packed hotel in the city collapsed when the quake hit at 2.46pm. A worldwide tsunami warning was issued in the aftermath of the tremor, which struck six miles down and 80 miles off the eastern coast. Last night Japanese scientists decided to release radioactive vapour to ease temperatures at the Fukushima Daiich nuclear plant. The pressure inside one of six boiling water reactors had risen to 1.5 times the level considered normal. But experts said the radioactive element in the vapour released would not affect the environment or human health. Their main aim is to prevent radiation leaks as they repair vital cooling systems. The quake also started a fire in a turbine building at a nuclear power plant in north-eastern Japan, but the reactor was reported to be secure. Panic swept the Pacific after the Red Cross warned of a potential wall of water higher than many islands. In Guam, the tsunami broke two US Navy submarines from their moorings. And in Hawaii, tens of thousands of residents were ordered to evacuate coastal areas. Police drove along main roads in Honolulu and Waikiki Beach, telling terrified holidaymakers: “This is not a drill.” But when the waves hit at 3am they were not as big as expected. Warnings were also issued along the west coast of America, Canada, the Philippines, Indonesia and South America. Experts said the quake was 8,000 times stronger than the one which devastated Christchurch in New Zealand last month. One of the dead was a girl of six who was crushed when the ceiling of supermarket collapsed in Miyagi. Several others died when a massive landslide hit a remote rural area. In north-eastern Fukushima, a dam collapsed and swept away homes after the tremor caused huge cracks. Four million people in Tokyo alone were left without power. Mobile phone and internet connections were cut across Japan. BA and Virgin have cancelled flights to the city. Workers in the captial cowered under desks as buildings swayed. Skyscrapers continued to rattle as dozens of aftershocks – including a giant 7.4 magnitude – rattled the capital for more than an hour. Fears of more devastation rose sharply again last night when a 6.6 magnitude quake struck 105 miles north of Tokyo around 7pm UK time. There were no immediate reports of damage. Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan said: “The earthquake has caused major damage. We will secure the safety of the people and ask them to be cautious and react calmly.”

Officials in Crescent City are reporting damage after tsunami waves began hitting the harbor this morning. ”The harbor has been destroyed,” said Crescent City Councilman Rich Enea in a phone interview at 9:45 a.m. “Thirty-five boats have been crushed and the harbor has major damage. Major damage.” Del Norte County Sheriff Cmdr. Bill Steven said most of the docks at the harbor are gone. Additionally, a recent surge filled the entire harbor and they are expecting that some of the other waves could send water into the harbor's parking lot, Steven said. Enea said no injuries have been reported at this point, which he attributed to plenty of tsunami preparedness exercises and the diligent work of first responders in sealing off the harbor.

The councilman said he's heard about 100 people have shown up to a Red Cross shelter at Del Norte High School. He said tsunami waters have made it near the doors of the Crescent City Cultural Center, and he fears the worst is yet to come. ”There's supposed to be larger surges coming in,” he said. “We're just trying to ride out the worst of these surges.” According to the Caltrans website, some sections of U.S. Highway 101 are currently closed due to the tsunami alert: at Kane Road that is 11.3 miles north of Trinidad, at the Humboldt and Del Norte county lines, at Sand Mine Road that is 1.4 miles south of Crescent City, and at Washington Road that is 1.2 miles north of Crescent City. Drivers are advised to use alternate routes.

Situation: Japanese authorities have informed the IAEA’s Incident and Emergency Centre (IEC) that they have ordered the evacuation of residents within a three-kilometre radius of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, and told people within a 10-kilometre radius to remain indoors. The Japanese authorities say there has so far been no release of radiation from any of the nuclear power plants affected by today’s earthquake and aftershocks. “The IAEA continues to stand ready to provide technical assistance of any kind, should Japan request this,” IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano said. The IAEA’s IEC continues to liaise with the Japanese authorities, and is in full response mode to monitor the situation closely round the clock.

Friends and family are anxious to connect with cruise passengers in the Pacific as tsunamis spawned by Japan's massive earthquake roll through the ocean. Meanwhile, cruise lines are checking in with their ships, and experts say the open seas are the best place to be if you're on a ship in a tsunami-threatened region. Christine Vella's father left Hawaii two days ago aboard Holland America's Zaandam. He is somewhere between Hawaii and Mexico, but Vella hasn't been able to reach him. "I'm sure everything's OK, but I'll feel much better when I hear from him," Vella said. Holland America told Vella it had contact with the ship, which was not affected by tsunamis triggered by the devastating 8.9-magnitude earthquake in Japan. "All Holland America Line ships and guests are safe and have not been impacted by this sad event. Guests onboard ships in nearby areas are being updated and reassured," Holland America spokeswoman Sally Andrews told CNN via e-mail. Holland America and other cruise lines have also been using social media sites to post updates and communicate with concerned relatives.

Tsunamis are likely to go completely unnoticed by passengers on ships on the open seas, according to Richard Burke, professor and chairman of engineering at the Maritime College of the State University of New York. In the open water, the energy in a tsunami is distributed across its very long wavelength. But while a ship at sea might not feel a tsunami pass, the effects for ships at port when a tsunami hits can be devastating. "As it moves into shallow water, essentially it stacks the wave up. The length becomes shorter, but the wave height becomes much larger and now you have a very tall, high-energy wave that's very dangerous," Burke said. Friday's earthquake prompted the U.S. National Weather Service to issue tsunami warnings for at least 50 countries and territories. The Azamara Quest, which was docked in Nagasaki, Japan -- hundreds of miles from the earthquake's epicenter -- was not directly impacted by the disaster.

"No Royal Caribbean, Celebrity or Azamara ships have been directly affected by the earthquake, or by the subsequent tsunamis," said Royal Caribbean spokeswoman Cynthia Martinez in a statement. The Azamara Quest departed Nagasaki Friday as scheduled. Cunard's Queen Mary 2 is en route to Nagasaki, according to Cunard's website. "Weather in the area is calm and it is unlikely that the sea area and route the ship is on will be affected by any aftereffects of the earthquake. The Commodore has made a broadcast to our Guests and staff advising them of the situation and he has walked the decks and all is calm on board," the cruise line's website said. In Hawaii, Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America left port in Kauai early to get back to open water where conditions were safe for the ship, according to the company's website. The ship was expected to return to Kauai after the tsunami threat passed. Vella and others are anxious to know when the threat has completely passed.

Why It Could’ve Been Worse



Japan’s massive earthquake today may be over, but we’re still feeling the effects, from nuclear reactor scares in Japan to tsunami warnings along the entire west coast of North America, from Mexico to Alaska’s Aleutian Islands. Much is still unknown about this earthquake, including official destruction assessments and total death tolls, but here’s what we do know:


Two preliminary earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.2 and 6.3 struck off the coast of Honshu, Japan, the day before the major blow: This 8.9-magnitude quake—the largest in Japan’s recorded history—struck at 2:46 pm local time on Friday, its epicenter located about 231 miles northeast of Tokyo at a depth of 15 miles. Even after this large one, over thirty aftershocks—the strongest measuring 7.1 in magnitude—continued to batter the island nation.

The Immediate Effects
Fires and collapsed buildings were the main cause of injuries and death early on, from conflagrations sweeping an oil refinery in Chiba prefecture near Tokyo to the roof collapsing during a graduation ceremony in Tokyo. But fears soon centered on Japan’s nuclear facilities: Four power plants successfully shut down, but one experienced problems:

According to Nature’s Tokyo correspondent, David Cyranoski, Japanese media are reporting that the emergency core cooling system (ECCS) at the Fukushima #1 plant is not working due to a loss of electrical power, and problems with the backup diesel generator. The reactor is currently relying on an alternate cooling system that circulates water using a pump system. This system can operate for about 7 to 8 hours. According to the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency of the government’s industry ministry, this is the first time in Japan that the ECCS of a nuclear power station has not functioned. [Nature]

The local governments near the Fukushima plant urged the area’s 2,000 residents to evacuate, though no leaks have been detected and the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum assured everyone (pdf) that Fukushima reactor’s core “still has a sufficient amount of water for cooling, with no danger of the nuclear fuel being exposed”.

Why It Could Have Been Worse

Death tolls are uncertain right now, but what is known is that the numbers are currently in the hundreds—not the thousands. That’s through a combination of luck and preparation. Kevin McCue, a seismologist at CQUniversity in Queensland, Australia, told the Telegraph that the initial death toll would probably have been much higher if the epicenter were closer to Tokyo, instead of off the coast. But Japan was also very much prepared for this quake: Its main island—Honshu Island—sits at the intersection of the Eurasian, Pacific, and Philippine tectonic plates, as part of the notoriously seismically active Ring of Fire. Because earthquakes are a normal occurrence for Japan, their buildings stood up well considering the magnitude of the quake.

From seawalls that line stretches of Japan’s coastline, to skyscrapers that sway to absorb earthquakes, to building codes that are among the world’s most rigorous, no country may be better prepared to withstand earthquakes than Japan. In addition to Japanese building codes and the earthquake’s location, technology is also helping the nation deal with the quake: Google, for example, has a Person Finder program that’s enabling Japanese citizens to search for loved ones or to post queries.


Tsunami
The quake shocks triggered over 30-foot-high waves to sweep across Japan’s coastal rice fields: It ripped homes from their foundations, engulfed entire towns, and caused the evacuation of thousands of people. “Roads were badly damaged and cut off as the tsunami washed away debris, cars and many other things,” Hiroshi Sato, a disaster management official in Iwate, told the BBC. So far, at least one ship carrying 100 people is reported to be missing, and a dam burst near Fukushima prefecture.


Outside of Japan, the National Weather Service has warned over 50 countries and territories about possibly tsunamis. The smaller nations around Japan—such as Indonesia and the Phillipines—were considered especially in danger because, unlike Japan, their governments may not be able to adequately respond to such an emergency.

While some officials feared that waves from the tsunami could be high enough to wash over entire islands in the Pacific, at least one expert said it was unlikely.The tsunami could cause significant damage and flooding, but “washing over islands is not going to happen,” said Gerard Fryer of the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. When the waves reached Hawaii, the U.S. Geological Survey was surprised when the waves weren’t as high as expected—less than six feet. By the time the waves reach the west coast of the U.S., they’re likely to cause some coastal flooding and damage, but deaths should be avoidable.

Cindi Preller of the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Centre told Fox 11 News that the tsunami could cause some unusually high tides but not major inundations. She said it was possible that officials will ask that beaches be cleared as a precaution and believed that the situation on the California coast might be similar to the aftermath of last year’s Chile quake. So while the water waves triggered by the earthquake make their way around the world, and Japan picks up the rubble from their strongest recorded earthquake, the main destruction from the fifth largest earthquake in the past century is over—and an even bigger disaster was avoided for Japan because of its strict building codes.
