Many road sessions of the central city of Da Dang, including the National Road 1A, have been submerged by floodwaters by 0.3-1 meter, causing serious traffic congestions. Downpours in the central province of Quang Ngai have raised the water level of Tra Khuc, Ve, and Tra Bong rivers over the alarming level No.2, and caused serious landslides blocking many road sessions nearby and threatening the lives of many families there. Upstream dams in the central Thua Thien – Hue Province are overflowed, causing the water levels in the Huong and Bo rivers to exceed alarming level No.3 and flooding many road sessions in Hue City by 0.4-0.7 meter. About 2,300 families in Huong Phong Commune have been isolated by rising floodwater which has risen about 0.5-1 meter high. The situation in Quang Nam and Binh Dinh provinces have also been worsened as it did in aforementioned localities, with many remote areas also isolated by floodwater. Eight hydropower dams in the region are draining water at a very fast pace, while 16 other dams are being filled up and will do so soon, said the regional storm and flood prevention center. Local authorities have also been reported that the remaining dams in their provinces are discharging water or will likely to do so soon.

    * Saving remaining estates [The Nation: 8/11/2011]
The Kingdom's most powerful private-sector organisation has called for the government to protect the remaining industrial estates in the eastern part of Bangkok stringently, otherwise the losses from the devastating flooding will soon exceed Bt1 trillion. The current estimate is for losses of between Bt400 billion and Bt500 billion.

Chatuchak, Phasi Charoen, Nong Khaem, Nong Chok, Min Buri get orders; BMA gets more pumps
Chatuchak district in centralnorth Bangkok, Phasi Charoen and Nong Khaem districts in the capital's west and Nong Chok and Min Buri in the east yesterday joined the list of districts ordered to be evacuated by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.

    * Tonnes of garbage, dirty water to deal with [The Nation: 7/11/2011]
Bangkok will face a tough task getting rid of more than three million tonnes of trash and treating huge volumes of dirty water left behind by the flood.
A key problem is that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration cannot send garbage trucks to flooded areas while 9.4 million people in those areas were expected to generate about 500 kilograms of rubbish each over a number of weeks.

Rosana Tositrakul calls on Thon Buri residents to stand up to the crisis by putting their local knowledge to use
    [IMG]
Thon Buri people are being urged stand up against the flood problem, by calling on a little local knowledge to help them out of their flood crisis. … Bangkok senator Rosana Tositrakul insists residents can turn the situation to their advantage by calling on innovative local wisdom to help push water out to the Gulf of Thailand faster. … She added the state's attempts to build floodwalls were not enough because the nature of water is to run from high to low-lying areas. "If we focus too much on blocking water, it can spread everywhere along roads and may hardly go back to canals," she said.

    6 November:
    * More area at risk due to lack of organization [Bangkok Post: 6/11/2011]: Nothing is totally safe yet, not even Suvarnabhumi airport, and officials involved describe a chaotic, often disorganised clash of agencies.
With the city centre, Suvarnabhumi airport and two industrial estates at risk, officials have been racing against the clock to drain water out of the eastern part of Bangkok through the city's canal system.
However, a lack of coordination between water management officials at both the city and national level has probably put more areas in danger.
In a worst-case scenario, the only option to solve the crisis would be to let the water drain through floodways _ which are not regulated by gates or pumps _ resulting in no control over the flow. …

    * BMA gives Froc crisis ultimatum [Bangkok Post: 6/11/2011]:
With waters rising in the Lat Phrao and Chatuchak area (above) and Din Daeng threatened, Bangkok officials have told the government: Start cooperating or we'll throw out your plans and start over.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has given the government an ultimatum to start cooperating or it will ditch the existing plans it has to tackle the city's floods.
Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra said yesterday the BMA would come up with a new flood management plan if the Flood Relief Operations Command (Froc) does not spell out by tomorrow how it will cooperate in tackling the floods.

    * Bangkok likely to flood, water expert [The Nation: 6/11/2011]
The promise that the 20 districts in Bangkok which remain dry would not flood was now hardly credible, according to a lecturer from King Mongkut Institute of Technology Lat Krabang with expertise in water and flood management.

    * More industry threatened [Bangkok Post: 4/11/2011]:Lat Krabang estate at risk
Floodwaters began bearing down on the Lat Krabang Industrial Estate just above the Suvarnabhumi airport.
Lat Krabang Industrial Estate in the east of Bangkok will be swamped by floods if rapidly advancing runoff cannot be drained quickly enough.

    * Sluice gates closed to save Bangchan industrial estate [The Nation: 4/11/2011]
The flood menace to the Bangchan Industrial Estate and its 93 factories in eastern Bangkok eased yesterday after the sluice gates of Canals 8, 9 and 10 in Pathum Thani were closed, but not without protest.

    * Suvarnabhumi 'will be safe' [The Nation: 2/11/2011] Airport officials 'highly confident' barriers will keep flood water at bay
Suvarnabhumi Airport is "highly confident" its flood-prevention scheme - with its 3.5-metre-high, 37-metre-wide earth dyke and sheet piles - will be effective.
Airports of Thailand senior executive vice-president Somchai Sawasdeepon said the airport also has a team of officers to monitor water levels at six flood gates, including Lat Krabang, Saen Saeb and Samrong. Airlines at the airport are being notified of water levels every three hours to ensure smooth aviation operations in Thailand despite the flooding in Don Mueang Airport. …

    * Plodprasop: Accept the reality [Bangkok Post: 3/11/2011]
The government will set up a committee to oversee restoration of the country after the flood recedes, but in the meantime people just have to accept the reality that they must continue living with the flood for now, Science and Technology Minister Plodprasop Surasawadi said on Thursday.

    * Changes to papercontinue [Bangkok Post: 4/11/2011]
Dear readers: Last week, we were optimistic that the flooding situation in Bangkok would ease after the river tides reached their peak at the weekend.
However, the reality is that the water has spread into inner city areas, reaching Chatuchak and Lat Phrao, and is now likely to head towards the central business districts.
As a result, the homes of more than 50 members of the Bangkok Post's editorial department have been flooded. Many more of them are now in areas with a high risk of being submerged soon. …

    * Northern Floodwater continues march to city heart [Bangkok Post]
The west side of Bangkok is totally inundated and will need a month to drain - but all eyes are on the flow from the north towards the heart of the city.
Floodwater from the northern outskirts of the capital continues to flow deeper towards the heart of Bangkok while its western side has been widely inundated and will need over a month to drain.

    * `Water war' ends [Bangkok Post]
The prime minister has backed down on her order to open the Khlong Sam Wa sluice gate, and it will be closed again to help to keep Bangkok dry.

    * Dams 'not to blame' [Bangkok Post]
The head of Egat (the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand) says the dams in upper Thailand were well managed and did not cause or worsen the floods - blame the heavy rains.

    * Thailand flood defenses divide Bangkok [Christian Science Monitor]
The Sam Wa canal breach highlights a growing divide over whether Thailand's flood defenses should be used to protect the heart of Bangkok at the expense of outer suburbs and towns to the north.
An uneasy calm prevailed today along the Sam Wa canal in northern Bangkok after Thailand's government acquiesced to angry locals who wanted to hack a 1-yard-wide opening in a sluice gate along the canal. The hole will allow their flooded suburbs to drain – but threaten flooding in the heart of the city.

    * Clash at the top [Bangkok Post]: BMA puts entire capital on alert; Governor issues order to repair sluice gate
    [IMG]
Bangkok is on full flood alert as city officials go up against the government, warning the whole metropolis is still in danger of looking like Tawee Wattana (above) because the prime minister bowed to mob demands to open a sluice gate.

    * Torrents advancing towards downtown [Bangkok Post]
Floodwater is advancing deeper into Bangkok from its northern outskirts as a northern sluice gate and a dyke failed to limit inflows to save the inner city.
The water level on Rarm Intra Road, both inbound and outbound, continued to rise and the road became impassable yesterday.

    * Residents 'fed up' [Bangkok Post]: Fed-up residents force open water sluice gates
Bang Chan Industrial Estate in the eastern Bangkok suburban district is in more danger of flooding after angry protesters forced the government to open wider a sluice gate in Klong Sam Wa to allow more water to flow from their inundated commuunities.
About 500 people block Nimitmai Road in Khlong Sam Wa district to demand the Khlong Sam Wa sluice gate be opened wider, from 70cm to 1.5m. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration eventually agreed to open the sluice gate by 80cm. TAWEECHAI TAWATPAKORN

    * PM hopeful but governor fears a second wave [The Nation]: The prime minister and the Bangkok governor offered differing views of the flood situation yesterday.
The premier said a critical mass of water had already been diverted away from the capital, while the governor feared another 'wave' would hit the western part of the city.

    * Suvarnabhumi Airport ready for floods [The Nation]: Suvarnabhumi Airport places high confidence in its flood-prevention scheme, with the 3.5-metre-high and 37-metre wide earthern dyke and sheet piles to slow the currents as well as other preventive measures.
Airports of Thailand Senior Executive Vice President Somchai Sawasdeepon said that the airport also has a team of officers to monitor water levels at six flood gates including Lat Krabang, Saen Saeb and Samrong. Airlines operating at the airport are notified of water level every three hours, to ensure smooth aviation operations in Thailand despite the flooding in Don Mueang Airport.
Yesterday, the airport accommodated 945 flights, a new daily record since the opening.

    * People help people [Bangkok Post]:Locals ease evacuee's suffering
Where did the "refugees" of the great floods of Bangkok flee? It turns out Chon Buri was the most popular destination by a wide margin.
This probably is due to it being only about 80km from Bangkok, with highways connecting the two provinces. … The major problem for this evacuation centre, which can accommodate up to 4,000 people, is a shortage of tents for evacuees with pets. … To help reduce stress for the evacuees, the centre also provides recreational activities for them, including music, sightseeing and camping for kids. …

24 large pumps have been distributed to the affected areas to get water to flow faster through the towns.
The pumps will double the capacity to move water from the eastern part of the capital, said Bangkok

    Frustrated Bangkok residents
Flooding in Bangkok frustrates many of the local residents who do not have confidence that the government has control of the situation.
"I do not know what government is doing. They promised that the water would run east and west, so why does the water come closer and corrode the inner city? I see no improvement, "said one resident to CNN while he is buying water pumps and sandbags to protect his home.
    Business Life in stasis
The flooding has important implications for business in Bangkok, where two more industrial zones - in Lat Krabang and Bang Chan in eastern Bangkok - has been surrounded by floods.
According to CNN, there was also only 10 percent of shops in Bangkok's big weekend market, Chatuchak Weekend Market, which stayed open on weekends.
"There are far fewer people today. People are afraid of the floods, "said one of the shop owners to CNN.

I was also taken aback when I read in a Time dispatch that the flooding appears to be "receding". The article appears to show that the end is not only in sight, people are beginning to "rebuild their homes, and their lives". Can you - or anyone else familiar with the real state of affairs - tell us if indeed the flood-waters are receding, as this article suggests? The link to the article it came from is below the quote.

The flooding began in late July and some provinces to the north of Bangkok have been inundated for more than a month. The waters have started to recede in recent days, revealing the massive cleanup effort that lies ahead.(See pictures of the incessant flooding in Thailand.)
For two months, Anan Dirath was forced to live on the second floor of his home in Nakorn Sawan province. But now that the water has receded to knee level, it's time to clean up.
He armed his two teenage children with mops, scrub brushes and garbage bags. Wading in the water, his family began scrubbing dirt off the walls and collecting the garbage around the house. He said the dirt was difficult to wash off and he has had to scrub the paint off to get rid of it.

HANOI, VIETNAM - Vietnamese officials say some of the country's worst flooding in a decade has killed 88 people and left four others missing in the central and southern regions.
Central Quang Nam province disaster official Nguyen Minh Tuan says recent floods have killed eight people there, leaving another missing as large swaths of land remain submerged.
The government says two other people have drowned in central Vietnam and three more are missing.

Tuan said Tuesday that large parts of Hoi An ancient town, a UNESCO heritage site popular with tourists, were inundated, but that no landmarks were under threat of damage.
Meanwhile, the death toll from seasonal floods in the southern Mekong Delta has hit 78. Water continues to inundate that area, but has started to recede in central Vietnam.

    Situation Update No. 1
    On 2011-11-09 at 05:56:25 [UTC]

    Event: Flood
Location: Vietnam Central prefectures Prefectures of Quang Ngai, Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Nam and Binh Dinh

    Number of Deads: 100 person(s)
    Number of Evacuated: 30000 person(s)

Situation: The death toll from weeks of severe flooding in Vietnam has climbed to 100, the government said Wednesday, as a fresh deluge in central provinces prompted the evacuation of some 30,000 people. The latest victims, 17 adults and five children, were killed when floods triggered by torrential rain swamped four central provinces in recent days, the national flood and storm control committee said. Flooding in the country’s southern Mekong Delta has already left 78 people dead. The UN said on Monday that 65 children under the age of 16 were among those killed in the delta region, most of them due to drowning. As the floods battered parts of central Vietnam, newspapers ran pictures of inundated houses and streets in the town of Hoi An and the ancient city of Hue. Both are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Forecasters said more rain was expected in the region. Nationwide, more than half a million people have seen their homes or livelihoods affected by the rising waters, which have inundated around 140,000 homes. Unusually heavy monsoon rains have caused devastation across the region, with more than 500 dead in Thailand’s worst flooding in half a century and around 250 killed in Cambodia.

SINGAPORE: Flash floods hit various parts of western Singapore on Saturday.

According to the National Environment Agency (NEA), the highest rainfall recorded as at 5.30 pm was 91.4 mm at Kent Ridge in the West Coast area.

The afternoon heavy downpour caused a canal at Block 611 in Clementi West to overflow.

One resident at the area said he's never seen anything like this in all his 10 years living there.

"When I saw it, I find it very dangerous, because the volume of water was huge; it carried a mass of water, and the current was moving very fast and splashed very strong waves on to the bridge here," said Mr Lim, a Clementi West resident.

Mr Lim said the flood lasted for about 45 minutes.

He said: "All the small drains are all submerged and the water splashed into the HDB block, and all the trees, plants are all half submerged."

National water agency PUB said the flash floods were due to the intense rainfall and high tide of about 3 metres on Saturday afternoon. And this was what caused the Sungei Pandan Kechil canal to overflow.

Flash floods also occurred along the AYE towards ECP and at Neo Pee Teck Lane, but they subsided within 20 minutes.

The flash floods along the AYE towards ECP caused two lanes to be affected while one lane remained passable.

PUB said the length of the affected section was about 100m and water depth was about 15cm.

At Neo Pee Teck Lane, two lanes were affected. The length of the affected section was about 90m and water depth was about 30cm. Water from the road went into the porch of two houses there.

The area is a flood-prone area and PUB has already scheduled drainage improvement works there. The works will start in the first quarter of 2012.

PUB said Saturday's downpour peaked at 1.20pm - 1.50pm during which 52.6mm of rain fell. The rate of rainfall peak intensity during this period was about 105.2mm/hr.

Thailand SINKING: Google translate, Many experts believe that Thailand, the reason this country is flooded serious impact for many reasons including climate change as global sea level rise, land subsidence phenomenon, poor urban planning , clearance of land for canal construction ...
    Southeast Asia SINKING:
In summary: Cambodia, Remote villages have been left in waist- to chest-high waters for up to three months, with three-quarters of the entire country swamped and 1.6 million people — about 1 in 10 — affected. Vietnam , But people living in hardest-hit Dong Thap province have suffered the longest with more than 30,000 homes submerged there.
    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Cambodia and Vietnam ,but less attention has been paid to its much poorer neighbors, where many rural families still waiting for water levels to drop have received little or no aid from their governments or international organizations. "This flood is the biggest I have ever seen in my life.If he catches fish in the stagnant floodwaters that have turned her Cambodian village into a lake, the family eats. The floods have completely destroyed our hope. "At least 250 people and countless livestock have died in Cambodia. Remote villages have been left in waist- to chest-high waters for up to three months, with three-quarters of the entire country swamped and 1.6 million people — about 1 in 10 — affected. "This year's been a freak event," said Kirsten Mildren, spokeswoman for the U.N.'s regional Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Thailand. "It's not like a tsunami or a hurricane where after a couple of days the immediate crisis has ended and you're into recovery. Here, you're weeks or months in water and it just keeps escalating." Vietnam, one of the fastest growing countries in Asia, is starting to recover. But people living in hardest-hit Dong Thap province have suffered the longest with more than 30,000 homes submerged there. The worries will not end when the flooding finally stops, especially in Cambodia. With 20 percent of the country's current rice fields ruined, some fear the water will not recede in time for planting of the next crop. An estimated 20 million people across Southeast Asia have been affected by flooding since June. Most are in Thailand, but the Philippines was slammed with back-to-back typhoons in October, and tiny, landlocked Laos was hit by cyclones in July and August.Myanmar also is experiencing flooding, though the extent is unclear because little information has been released from the secretive country. Local media there reported some 30,000 people were hit by flash floods last month that killed more than 160.

Indonesia SINKING: Some flooded areas in Semarang. Flooding that is high enough in some areas in the Northern District of Semarang and Semarang East / Hundreds of farmers who work the land of tens of hectares (ha) in three villages, namely Kedawung, Lucky and Lucky Lor, District Kroya, Cilacap,Central Java (Java), has still not entered the growing season. Because, more than a week rice fields in the area flooded.
Philippines SINKING: Davao del Norte floods affect 8,610 families / Heavy rains cause Capiz floods .Flash floods brought about by heavy rains the past few days have affected 430 families in 10 municipalities in Capiz with several families still remaining in various designated evacuation centers in the province. Capiz Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) action officer Esperidion Pelaez said a total of 63 barangays in 10 municipalities were affected by the flash floods last Tuesday
Subtle hint: He said overextraction of groundwater will result in deterioration of water quality, land subsidence, drying up of wells and salt water intrusion. In India, groundwater volume in three regions in that country’s northern part has dropped by 109 billion cubic meters due to overextraction. Similar problems were reported in Thailand and Indonesia. (Subtle hint to soil subsidence in Indonesia, Thailand and India!)

    Pampanga warned of water lack

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO—At least 12 of the 20 towns and two cities in Pampanga may experience groundwater shortage by 2025 due to overextraction, experts and officials said during the Provincial Initiative on Water Resource Management summit here on Wednesday.

Bryan Villamor, a consultant on water resources of the provincial government, said Pampanga is overly dependent on groundwater while, at the same time, it is leaving surface water along river systems unused.

“A main concern is the reported overextraction or overdraft of groundwater sources. Based on ongoing studies, it is estimated that by 2025, 12 of the 22 towns and cities in Pampanga may be at risk of groundwater shortage,” he said.

Villamor said 90 percent of Pampanga’s surface water remains untapped, with only 10 percent being used mainly to irrigate farms.

He said the Pampanga River Basin, which is the fourth largest river basin in the country, has a total catchment area of 10,434 square kilometers and has a potential supply of 18.34 million cubic meters a day.

Of the Pampanga River Basin’s potential supply, between eight and nine million cubic meters daily could be used as a “dependable surface water supply.”

Villamor said surface water is the best alternative to groundwater and would result in increased production because of abundant supply and lower costs.

He said overextraction of groundwater will result in deterioration of water quality, land subsidence, drying up of wells and salt water intrusion.

Case studies about groundwater depletion in India, Thailand and other Asian countries were presented during the summit attended by Pampanga mayors and representatives of water districts in the province.

In India, groundwater volume in three regions in that country’s northern part has dropped by 109 billion cubic meters due to overextraction. Similar problems were reported in Thailand and Indonesia. Jun Malig, Inquirer Central Luzon

With the Northeast Monsoon having already set in, experts are predicting more than the annual average of 100 landslides. "We are expecting more landslides with more rain but we must prevent more casualties. We need to be alert and look out for the warning signs and symptoms,'' said Works Minister Shaziman Abu Mansor. The Works Ministry is also conducting a public awareness campaign, which includes "full alert" advertisements in major newspapers, to highlight danger signs. Among the signs of an impending landslide, Mr Shaziman said, are "slanting trees, cracks on slopes, floors and walls". Asking the public to "act now before it is too late", the minister stressed the importance of notifying the authorities of these warning signs instead of trying to solve the problem themselves. "For example, there are those who have noticed trees slanting on the slopes near their building. But instead of alerting the authorities, they just chopped off the trees and not long after a landslide hit and people died," he said. "Inform the authorities when you see such symptoms even if you do not live in the area". Selangor and the Federal Territory, within which Kuala Lumpur sits, have experienced the most landslides since the 1970s, according to government records, followed by the states of Pahang, Penang and Sabah. Other high-risk areas are Ulu Klang, Cameron Highlands and Lojing in Kelantan.

It rains everyday now and we have news about government continue to prepare for flood rescue plan. 500+ schools/halls identified as flood escape temp center in case it's required.
I'm unsure how effective and efficient will our government in executing the plan but we all are aware of the heavy fall lately.

Thailand floods a 'wake-up' call for Asia: ADB

    by Martin Abbugao, Agence France-Presse
    Posted at 12/01/2011 1:16 PM | Updated as of 12/01/2011 1:16 PM

SINGAPORE - Devastating floods in Thailand and other parts of Asia are a wake-up call to governments to do more to cope with the effects of climate change, a top Asian Development Bank official has warned.

Asia is dotted with large coastal cities from Shanghai to Calcutta that are vulnerable to flooding, and governments need to put in place long-term solutions to deal with the problem, said David McCauley, the ADB's lead climate change specialist.

Research suggested that more floods of the scale that hit Thailand in recent months, leaving more than 600 dead affecting millions of livelihoods, are likely as climate change progresses, he said.

"I think that these events are wake-up calls for governments around the region to pay more attention to these long term trends," McCauley told AFP in Singapore on Tuesday during a stopover on his way to climate change talks in Durban.

"It's the wave of the future so they need to better cope with climate change impacts."

McCauley said a study last year carried out jointly by the Manila-based ADB, the World Bank and the Japan International Cooperation Agency forecast the flooding in Thailand
-- but did not predict how soon it would come.

"The floods that we saw in Thailand are consistent with what's predicted to occur as a result of climate change," he said.

"The study looked at Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City and Manila and what can be expected over the next 40-50 years. It predicted exactly the kind of things that occurred in Bangkok."

McCauley said the region should not just brace for floods but also droughts and heatwaves.

After the floods, "we can have a drought next year and a heatwave the following year and all of that would be consistent with what's been predicted as a result of climate change," he said.

"So it's not any one set of measures that need to be taken. All of these new risks need to be considered and fed into the way cities are being developed and the way social protection measures are designed," he added.

"All across Asia you have these big coastal cities with enormous populations at risk," he cautioned.

This should prompt governments to put more emphasis on urban planning and implementing stricter systems in issuing building permits for residential and industrial sites.

Environmental consciousness is "definitely finding its way into the fabric of economic development policy and practice" in Asia but strong policy frameworks must be implemented soon, he said.

Asia has now become the largest source of new greenhouse gas emissions as a result of the rapid economic growth in China and India and continued deforestation in Indonesia, McCauley said.

The majority of new infrastructure to be build worldwide in the next 20 years will be in Asia, he noted.

"Unless we get this right, unless those transport systems and those power plants are energy efficient and low carbon, then we're going to lock in for another 40-50 years the old patterns of high carbon intensive development," he warned.

If current patterns do not change, Asia will account for 40-45 percent of greenhouse gas emissions in the energy sector alone by 2030, he said.

This will rise to more than 50 percent if greenhouse gas emissions from land use and deforestation are added.

"Asia has more people at risk from the adverse impact of climate change than any other region of the world, which also gives it a stake in trying to find solutions to the problem," he said.

    Event: Landslide
Location: Indonesia Province of North Sumatra Island of Nias, Majo Kampung Barije district

    Number of Deads: 4 person(s)
    Number of Missing: 30 person(s)

Situation: At least five people were killed on Thursday when a rain-triggered landslide hit a village on an island off Indonesia's Sumatra, officials said. Several others remain missing. Heavy rains have hit South Nias Regency on the popular surfing island of Nias, located about 120 kilometers (74 miles) off the western coast of Sumatra, for three consecutive days. It has caused a number of landslides in the area. In Majo Kampung Marije, a landslide buried dozens of houses and vehicles, emergency services said. Members of neighboring villages rushed to the scene and pulled out five dead bodies, but at least two others are still believed to be missing. South Nias Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) chief Arototona Mendeva confirmed at least five people had been killed. He said limited communication links and difficult access to the area, as well as flooded roads and bridges, have hampered relief efforts. In total, at least 37 houses, 25 motorcycles and four vehicles are believed to have been buried in the landslide. Mendeva said a search and rescue team is en-route to the area to assist local emergency services and volunteers. The island of Nias was one of the most affected areas of Indonesia when an enormous 9.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the west coast of Sumatra, unleashing a giant tsunami which killed over 240,000 people in fourteen different countries. At least 122 people were killed in Nias and hundreds more were left homeless.

    Event: Tropical Storm
    Location: Philippines Mindanao Mindanao-wide

    Number of Deads: 140 person(s)
    Number of Missing: 260 person(s)

Situation:Some 140 people were killed and 260 missing in floods and landslides triggered by a tropical storm in the southern Philippines, disaster relief and military officials said Saturday. Tropical Storm Washi slammed into the southern region of Mindanao on Friday, bringing heavy rains that caused many rivers to overflow. The floods were worsened by the high tide, local officials said. Lieutenant General Jessie Dellosa, armed forces chief of staff, said military rescuers have retrieved 92 bodies in the city of Cagayan de Oro. At least 40 more drowned in the flash floods in Iligan City, while five died in a landslide in Monkayo town in Compostella Valley province, the Office of Civil Defence (OCD) said. Three people drowned in Polanco town in Zamboanga del Norte province, it added. Benito Ramos, OCD administrator, said rescue teams have been dispatched to search for the 260 missing people in Iligan and Cagayan de Oro cities. More than 400 residents have been rescued in the two cities, he added. President Benigno Aquino III expressed alarm over the high death toll and directed officials to extend all assistance to the affected areas.
