Hidden Portals in Earth's Magnetic Field

A favorite theme of science fiction is "the portal"--an extraordinary opening in space or time that connects travelers to distant realms. A good portal is a shortcut, a guide, a door into the unknown. If only they actually existed....

It turns out that they do, sort of, and a NASA-funded researcher at the University of Iowa has figured out how to find them.
"We call them X-points or electron diffusion regions," explains plasma physicist Jack Scudder of the University of Iowa. "They're places where the magnetic field of Earth connects to the magnetic field of the Sun, creating an uninterrupted path leading from our own planet to the sun's atmosphere 93 million miles away."
Observations by NASA's THEMIS spacecraft and Europe's Cluster probes suggest that these magnetic portals open and close dozens of times each day. They're typically located a few tens of thousands of kilometers from Earth where the geomagnetic field meets the onrushing solar wind. Most portals are small and short-lived; others are yawning, vast, and sustained. Tons of energetic particles can flow through the openings, heating Earth's upper atmosphere, sparking geomagnetic storms, and igniting bright polar auroras.
NASA is planning a mission called "MMS," short for Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission, due to launch in 2014, to study the phenomenon. Bristling with energetic particle detectors and magnetic sensors, the four spacecraft of MMS will spread out in Earth's magnetosphere and surround the portals to observe how they work.
Just one problem: Finding them. Magnetic portals are invisible, unstable, and elusive. They open and close without warning "and there are no signposts to guide us in," notes Scudder.
Actually, there are signposts, and Scudder has found them.
Portals form via the process of magnetic reconnection. Mingling lines of magnetic force from the sun and Earth criss-cross and join to create the openings. "X-points" are where the criss-cross takes place. The sudden joining of magnetic fields can propel jets of charged particles from the X-point, creating an "electron diffusion region."
To learn how to pinpoint these events, Scudder looked at data from a space probe that orbited Earth more than 10 years ago.
"In the late 1990s, NASA's Polar spacecraft spent years in Earth's magnetosphere," explains Scudder, "and it encountered many X-points during its mission."

Because Polar carried sensors similar to those of MMS, Scudder decided to see how an X-point looked to Polar. "Using Polar data, we have found five simple combinations of magnetic field and energetic particle measurements that tell us when we've come across an X-point or an electron diffusion region. A single spacecraft, properly instrumented, can make these measurements."
This means that single member of the MMS constellation using the diagnostics can find a portal and alert other members of the constellation. Mission planners long thought that MMS might have to spend a year or so learning to find portals before it could study them. Scudder's work short cuts the process, allowing MMS to get to work without delay.
It's a shortcut worthy of the best portals of fiction, only this time the portals are real. And with the new "signposts" we know how to find them.

Using telescopes and a photography technique used to capture the flow around moving objects, scientists at NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center managed to capture some incredible images that show exactly what a jet does to the air when it goes supersonic. 1P

NASA says the following photos were taken using the Ground-to-Air Schlieren Photography System, or GASPS, which used digital cameras, two telescopes and the sun as a light source. Scientists launched an F-15 and F/A-18 over Edwards Air Force Base in California and then captured the images as the jets hit supersonic speeds.P

Why do this? As Aviation Week notes, this photography technique could prove more accurate and informative than traditional wind tunnel tests. It also gives a clearer understanding of how sonic booms work so that, perhaps, technology can be developed to reduce them over land and we can get Concords to ferry us from NYC to LA in a couple of hours.P

สำนักข่าวต่างประเทศรายงานเมื่อวันที่ 27 ก.ย. ว่า สมาชิกสภาผู้แทนราษฎรสหรัฐฯ ฝั่งพรรครีพับลิกัน ปฏิเสธข้อเรียกร้องของประธานาธิบดี บารัค โอบามา ที่ต้องการให้สภาออกกฎหมายอย่างตรงไปตรงมา เพื่อให้รัฐบาลสามารถปฏิบัติหน้าที่ต่อไปได้หลังหมดปีงบประมาณ 2013 หลังผ่านเที่ยงคืนวันที่ 30 ก.ย. รวมถึงอนุมัติขยายเพดานหนี้ เพื่อหลีกเลี่ยงการผิดชำระหนี้ครั้งประวัติศาสตร์

ส.ส.รีพับลิกัน เรียกร้องให้รัฐบาลเลื่อนเวลาบังคับใช้กฎหมายประกันสุขภาพของโอบามา หรือ โอบามาแคร์ อย่างเต็มรูปแบบไปอีก 1 อีกปี เพื่อแลกกับการเพิ่มอำนาจกู้เงินของสหรัฐฯ เพื่อให้สามารถกู้เงินใช้จ่ายไปจนถึงสิ้นปี 2014

สมาชิกระดับสูงของรีพับลิกันบางคนคาดว่ารัฐบาลจะไม่เข้าสู่ภาวะ การหยุดงานของหน่วยงานรัฐ (government shutdown) ในวันที่ 1 ต.ค. หรือผิดชำระหนี้ในเดือนหน้า อย่างไรก็ตาม นายจอห์น โบห์เนอร์ ประธานสภาผู้แทนราษฎร เตือนว่า สภาของเขาอาจไม่ลงนามกฎหมายงบประมาณ ที่คาดว่าจะผ่านความเห็นชอบจากวุฒิสภาในไม่กี่วันข้างหน้า

ขณะเดียวกัน วุฒิสภา หรือ สภาสูง ซึ่งพรรคเดโมแครตครองเสียงข้างมาก ตั้งใจจะผ่านกฎหมายงบประมาณ ซึ่งช่วยให้รัฐบาลมีงบใช้จ่ายตั้งแต่ 1 ต.ค.-15 พ.ย. และส่งให้สภาผู้แทนราษฎรพิจารณาในเร็วๆนี้

นอกจากเรียกร้องให้เลื่อนเวลาบังคับใช้ โอบามาแคร์ 1 ปีแล้ว เหล่าผู้นำในสภาล่างยังเรียกร้องให้มีการตัดลดงบประมาณ และออกกฎหมายจำกัดปริมาณหนี้ เพื่อแลกกับการขยายเพดานหนี้ด้วย ซึ่งเป็นสิ่งที่โอบามาย้ำมาตลอดว่า จะไม่ยอมให้เกิดขึ้น.

The super-volcano beneath Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming has been rising at a record rate since 2004. It would explode with a force a thousand times more powerful than the Mount St Helens eruption in 1980.

Spewing lava far into the sky, a cloud of plant-killing ash would fan out and dump a layer 10ft deep up to 1,000 miles away.

Two-thirds of the U.S. could become uninhabitable as toxic air sweeps through it, grounding thousands of flights and forcing millions to leave their homes.

This is the nightmare that scientists are predicting could happen if the world’s largest super-volcano erupts for the first time in 600,000 years, as it could do in the near future.

Yellowstone National Park’s caldera has erupted three times in the last 2.1million years and researchers monitoring it say we could be in for another eruption.

They said that the super-volcano underneath the Wyoming park has been rising at a record rate since 2004 - its floor has gone up three inches per year for the last three years alone, the fastest rate since records began in 1923.

But hampered by a lack of data they have stopped short of an all-out warning and they are unable to put a date on when the next disaster might take place.

When the eruption finally happens it will dwarf the effect of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajökull volcano, which erupted in April last year, causing travel chaos around the world.

The University of Utah's Bob Smith, an expert in Yellowstone's volcanism told National Geographic: ‘It's an extraordinary uplift, because it covers such a large area and the rates are so high.

‘At the beginning we were concerned it could be leading up to an eruption.’

But he added: ‘Once we saw the magma was at a depth of ten kilometres, we weren't so concerned.

‘If it had been at depths of two or three kilometre we'd have been a lot more concerned.’

Robert B. Smith, professor of geophysics at the University of Utah, who has led a recent study into the volcano, added: ‘Our best evidence is that the crustal magma chamber is filling with molten rock.

‘But we have no idea how long this process goes on before there either is an eruption or the inflow of molten rock stops and the caldera deflates again’.

The Yellowstone Caldera is one of nature’s most awesome creations and sits atop North America’s largest volcanic field.

Its name means ‘cooking pot’ or ‘cauldron’ and it is formed when land collapses following a volcanic explosion.

In Yellowstone, some 400 miles beneath the Earth’s surface is a magma ‘hotspot’ which rises to 30 miles underground before spreading out over an area of 300 miles across.

Scientists monitoring it believe that a swelling magma reservoir six miles underground may be causing the recent uplifts.

They have also been keeping an eye on a ‘pancake-shaped blob’ of molten rock he size of Los Angeles which was pressed into the volcano some time ago.

But due the extreme conditions it has been hard to work out what exactly is going on down below, leading researchers unable to say with certainty what will happen - or when.

Since the most recent blast 640,000 years ago there have been around 30 smaller eruptions, the most recent of which was 70,000 years ago.

They filled the caldera with ash and lava and made the flat landscape that draws thousands of tourists to Yellowstone National Park every year.

‘Clearly some deep source of magma feeds Yellowstone, and since Yellowstone has erupted in the recent geological past, we know that there is magma at shallower depths too,’ said Dan Dzurisin, a Yellowstone expert with the U.S. Geological Survey at Cascades Volcano Observatory in Washington State.

‘There has to be magma in the crust, or we wouldn't have all the hydrothermal activity that we have.

‘There is so much heat coming out of Yellowstone right now that if it wasn't being reheated by magma, the whole system would have gone stone cold since the time of the last eruption 70,000 years ago.’

Aucklanders warned about risk of volcanic eruptions.

September 27, 2013 – NEW ZEALAND – Aucklanders have been warned that they cannot be complacent about the risk of volcanoes and that a serious eruption could cause large-scale destruction and force the evacuation of 450,000 people in the region.
Experts say an eruption in the Auckland volcanic field is a “low probability, high consequence” event but city-dwellers would only have days to prepare. Scientists, civil defense experts, academics, and council staff were in the city yesterday for the Managing Volcanic Risk in Auckland forum, pooling their knowledge to plan for a possible city-wide disaster. Civil Defense Minister Nikki Kaye opened the forum, spelling out possible consequences for Auckland in the event of an eruption. “If we look at possible effects on Auckland these could include the devastation of buildings and infrastructure, large economic losses, a reduction in air and rail services, disruption to vital lifeline services, and increased health risks from ash and dust,” she said. Experts could not prevent an eruption, or predict exactly when one might occur, but the most recent eruption in the Auckland volcanic field was Rangitoto, about 550 years ago, she said. Auckland City Council civil defense controller Clive Manley said although agencies were combining efforts to plan for an eruption, it was difficult to tell how the public would react. Research showed Aucklanders felt safe from natural disasters, and would hesitate before acting to protect themselves, he said.

Preparation: “It’s a huge challenge in getting Auckland to take it seriously.” People saw civil defense staff efficiently managing small-scale storms and did not see a need to prepare for an emergency. “We’re doing such a good job we’re making people complacent.” The worst-case scenario eruption could affect a zone within a 5km radius, and up to 450, 000 people. Aucklanders were the least prepared nationwide for an emergency and only 11 per cent had emergency kits. GNS volcanologist Brad Scott said there had been between 50 to 55 eruptions in the field over the last 250,000 years, but the results were “variable over that time,” and it was not possible to pinpoint when volcanic activity could next occur. In the case of the Mt Tongariro eruption in August last year, scientists monitored seismic activity once signs of unrest occurred, but were unable to predict the exact eruption time. Aucklanders could expect days to weeks of warning at most, he said. “Volcanoes always put their hand up.” Most of the public considered Rangitoto the most prominent volcano because it was “in peoples’ face” but it was monitored on an equal footing to all the other volcano’s in the field. –NZ Herald
