    Sunspot 1117 Update / C-Class flares [IMG]
    10/26/2010 by Kevin VE3EN at 02:10
Comment on Message Board Solar Update -Big Sunspot 1117 has produced numerous C-Class flares within the past 12 hours. There will continue to be the chance for C-Class flares and perhaps a smaller chance of an M-Class event. This region continues to become better organized magnetically and there is some polarity mixing taking place towards the center of this group.
    Sunspot 1117 (Early Tuesday)

The 7.7-magnitude (M7.6 - RSOE EDIS) undersea quake hit the Mentawai Islands, off the west coast of Indonesia, at 9.42pm yesterday (1.42am today AEDT). The Australia embassy in Jakarta said it was trying to contact the captain of a boat which was in the area when the quake struck. They believe between eight to 10 Australians were on the boat, Southern Cross, which is owned by Sumatran Surfariis. "There is one boat that we haven't been able to make contact with, the Southern Cross," said Yuli, a staff member at Padang-based Sumatran Surfariis. "Among the passengers there are nine Australian citizens." The boat is skippered by Australian man Chris Scurrah and Japanese man Akinori Fujit, with up to nine other Australians on board. A Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman said efforts to contact the boat was "hampered by poor telephone coverage and by the fact that the boat is reportedly not equipped with a satellite phone". Tom Plummer, Mentawai Islands program manager of the Australian non-governmental organisation (NGO) Surfaid, confirmed the boat was missing. "It was close to the epicentre," he said. "There are genuine fears." Mr Plummer said he heard there had been reports of tsunami damage to local villages.

"We're getting reports that a lot of locals are injured and missing after a wall of water came into low-lying villages," Mr Plummer said. SurfAid founder Dave Jenkins said there had been a "significant tsunami" on the west of the area's southernmost islands. "We have unconfirmed reports of people being swept away and missing," Dr Jenkins said. "There's definitely been damage. "The tsunami went into the main surf locality of Macaroni Bay." Dr Jenkins said SurfAid was trying to charter a plane to search for the missing boat. The area is 240 kilometres west of Bengkulu on Sumatra island and 280 kilometres south of Padang, an area popular with tourists. The Indonesian Geophysics and Meteorology agency lifted an earlier tsunami warning. The 7.7 earthquake was followed by powerful magnitude 6.1 and 6.2 aftershocks about five and eight hours later in the same area. The power and shallow depth of the earthquake - at 20.6 kilometres - prompted the US-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center to issue a "tsunami watch" bulletin to guide local authorities on how to respond but that was later cancelled. Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity, and the archipelago is frequently struck by powerful earthquakes.

    Situation Update No. 2
    On 2010-10-26 at 09:41:23 [UTC]

    Event: Tsunami
Location: MultiCountries Indonesia, Australia Tanahbalah, Pagai,Padang, Enggano, Cocos Island
    Number of Deads: 23 person(s)
    Number of Evacuated: 160 person(s)

Situation: At least 160 people, mostly women and children, are missing from an Indonesian village that was pounded by an enormous wave after an earthquake off the coast of Sumatra caused a local tsunami, officials said on Tuesday. The 7.5 magnitude quake hit 78 km west of South Pagai in the Mentawai islands late Monday and destroyed most buildings in the coastal village of Betu Monga, said Hardimansyah, an official with the regional branch of the Department of Fisheries. "Of the 200 people living in that village, only 40 have been found. 160 are still missing, mostly women and children," he told Reuters by phone.

"We have people reporting to the security post here that they could not hold onto their children, that they were swept away. A lot of people are crying." Hardimansyah, who has only one name, said in the nearby village of Malakopa, at least one person was confirmed dead and two others missing. He said 80 percent of the houses in the area were damaged and food supplies were low. Local police were searching for missing people and setting up emergency posts, said Ronald, a police officer at Sikakap district police station. "We are predicting that people will need food supplies and shelter. The rain is coming down very hard, the wind is very strong," he said. Mudjiarto, the head of the disaster response unit at the Health Ministry, told Reuters that two bodies had been found near Sipora island and that several people were still missing. In South Pagai island, waves penetrated about 600 meters into coastal villages, while in North Pagai island, waves reached to the roof of local houses, he said. A tourist boat carrying between eight and 10 Australians has been out of radio contact since the quake occurred, according to a statement issued by Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Disaster officials say the death toll from a tsunami off western Indonesia has climbed to 23 and scores of villagers are missing. The 10-foot (three-meter) -high wave was triggered by a 7.7-magnitude quake, which struck 13 miles (20 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor late Monday.

It washed away hundreds of houses in two coastal villages on Pagai and Silabu, part of the remote and sparsely populated Mentawai island chain. Ade Edward, a disaster management agency official, said Tuesday that casualty figures were just starting to trickle in. So far, 23 bodies have been found and at least 167 people were missing. Indonesia is on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire and is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity.

    ยอดคนสูญหายและตายเพิ่มขึ้น ตาย 40 สูญหาย 380

    Event: Tsunami
Location: MultiCountries Indonesia, Australia Tanahbalah, Pagai,Padang, Enggano, Cocos Island
    Number of Deads: 40 person(s)
    Number of Evacuated: 380 person(s)

    Situation:

At least 40 people were killed and 380 others were left missing after 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off Sumatra on Monday, Indonesian officials said Tuesday. The numbers were in flux because information was trickling in from remote parts of Indonesia, a country made up of myriad islands. Large waves also were keeping rescue crews from reaching the disaster zone, Hendri Dori Satoko, head of the Mentawai Islands parliament, said on local television. More than 100 of those missing were presumed aboard a tourist ship that lost contact, said Surya of the West Sumatran disaster management board."The local residents in the Mentawai Islands reported seeing a tsunami as high as 3 meters [that] reached as far as 600 meters inland," said Mujiharto, of the Indonesian health ministry. The quake struck at 9:42 p.m. Monday. A tsunami warning was triggered shortly after, but was lifted about two hours later. "It is possible that a small tsunami has occurred, especially in the islands. We, however, don't have an official report at the moment," said Fauzi, the head of Indonesia's meteorological and geophysics department.

Eight to 10 of those aboard the missing were thought to be Australians. "The Australian Embassy in Jakarta is continuing its efforts to contact the Australian captain of a tourist boat, the MV Southern Cross, which is understood to have been in the affected area when the earthquake occurred," said Lisa Bateman, a spokeswoman for Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. "The embassy's efforts to contact the captain have been hampered by poor telephone coverage in the area and by the fact that the boat is reportedly not equipped with a satellite phone," she said. Indonesia's sea security coordinator said that it had not received any distress calls from boats in the area, she added. The epicenter of the quake was 240 kilometers (149 miles) south of Padang, at a depth of 20.6 kilometers (12.8 miles), according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The magnitude was revised upward from a preliminary magnitude of 7.5. The city of Padang and the Mentawai Islands, a popular surfing destination, are located at the meeting of two tectonic plates, making them vulnerable to earthquakes and tsunamis.

    Number of Missing: 502 person(s)

    Situation:

A tsunami that pounded several islands in western Indonesia killed at least 113 people and scores more are missing, officials say. A 7.7-magnitude (M7.5 - RSOE EDIS) earthquake triggered the three-metre wave that washed hundreds of homes into the sea late Monday. Rescuers were having a hard time reaching the Mentawai islands, closest to the epicentre, on Tuesday because of strong winds and rough seas. But reports of damage and injuries were steadily climbing. Mujiharto, who heads the Health Ministry's crisis centre, said 113 bodies have been recovered so far. The number of missing was between 150 and 500. The fault that ruptured Monday, running the length of the west coast of Sumatra island, also caused the quake that unleashed a monster tsunami around the Indian Ocean in 2004, killing 230,000 people in a dozen countries. Getting to the Mentawais, a popular surfing spot 280 kilometres from the Sumatra coast, takes 12 hours and the islands are reachable only by boat.

A group of Australians said they were hanging out on the back deck of their chartered surfing vessel, anchored in a nearby bay, when the temblor hit. It generated a wave that caused them to smash into a neighbouring boat, and before they knew it, a fire was ripping through their cabin. "We threw whatever we could that floated — surfboards, fenders — then we jumped into the water," Rick Hallet told Australia's Nine Network. "Fortunately, most of us had something to hold on to ... and we just washed in the wetlands, and scrambled up the highest trees that we could possibly find and sat up there for an hour and a half." Water in some places reached rooftops, and in Muntei Baru, a village on Silabu, 80 per cent of the houses were damaged. Some 3,000 people were seeking shelter Tuesday in emergency camps, and the crews from several ships were still unaccounted for in the Indian Ocean, officials said earlier in the day.

Separately on Tuesday, emergency officials were rushing to evacuate several thousand residents from the slopes of the country's most volatile volcano, Mount Merapi, as scientists warned that the volatile volcano had started to erupt.

    Event: Tsunami
Location: MultiCountries Indonesia, Australia Tanahbalah, Pagai,Padang, Enggano, Cocos Island
    Number of Deads: 113 person(s)
    Number of Missing: 502 person(s)

Situation: At least 113 people were killed and more than 500 were missing last night after a tsunami rolled through a remote island chain in Indonesia. The quake-triggered tsunami destroyed villages and homes in its path. The 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck the Mentawai Islands west of Sumatra, generating waves up to 3m that swept away 10 villages. Nine Australian surfers, whose boat the Southern Cross was believed to be near the epicentre of the quake when it struck at 1.42am (AEDT), were reportedly found safe and sound late last night after relatives spent a harrowing 21 hours waiting to hear from them. The Herald Sun reported that the head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency in West Sumatra, Harmensyah, told Indonesian news wire Detik.com the Australians on the Southern Cross "were not missing, but had lost contact". "There are no Westerners who have died or are injured; they are all safe," he said. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade was last night seeking confirmation of the report. Mobile phone coverage in the area is poor, so it is not uncommon for vessels to slip out of communication range for long periods.

About 113 people have died on nearby islands, with hundreds more injured and scores missing. With few rescuers able to get to the islands to help with searches, fisherman have been left to find the dead and look for the living. Mentawai district chief, Edison Salelo Baja said corpses were strewn about because there were not enough people to dig graves. Though hundreds of disaster officials were unable to get to many of the villages on the Mentawai islands - reachable only by a 12-hour boat ride - they were preparing for the worst. "We have 200 body bags on the way, just in case," said Mujiharto, who heads the Health Ministry's crisis centre. Harmensyah, the head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency in West Sumatra, said: "There are no Westerners who have died or are injured. They are all safe." National Disaster Management Agency spokesman Agolo Suparto said the death toll was expected to rise. "Ten villages have been swept away by the tsunami," Mr Suparto told Agence France-Presse. Health Ministry Crisis Centre head Mudjiharto said the Mentawai waves swept as far as 600m inland on South Pagai island, the hardest hit. "Eighty per cent of buildings in Muntei village have been damaged by the waves and many people are missing there," he said. Medical personnel were on their way to the most devastated areas in helicopters but rescue efforts have been hampered by disruption to communications. There are no commercial flights to the island and travelling by ferry from Sumatra can take at least half a day.

The Australians were just a day into a two-week surfing trip on the boat owned and operated by Victorian surf tour operator Chris Scurrah when the quake struck, followed moments later by a 3m wave. Before the reports of their survival last night, their families had been optimistic that the group of longstanding friends was safe and waiting to be picked up by search crews. "We're hoping they have been washed up somewhere, and they're just sitting under a tree, waiting to be found," said Lucy McTaggart, daughter of Alex McTaggart, who was the independent member for the state seat of Pittwater between November 2005 and March 2007. As well as Mr Scurrah, the other Australians aboard the 24m boat were Clifford Humphries, Gary Mountford, NSW police officer Chris Papallo, Jeff Annesley, Colin Steele, Steve Reynolds and Neil Cox. Several local crewmen and another skipper from Japan, Akinori Fujita, were also aboard.

Earlier yesterday, a group of 15 Australians on the surf tour boat The Midas were hit by the 3m-high waves caused by the undersea quake while in a bay on the islands. The wave initially hit the boat Freedom III, which was anchored next to The Midas. "The wave picked that boat up and brought it towards us and ran straight into us and our boat exploded, caught on fire, we had a fireball on the back deck and right through the saloon within seconds," said Midas skipper Rick Hallet said. "I ordered everyone up to the top deck to get as high as possible, then the boat exploded and we had to abandon ship," he told the Nine Network. "The bay we were in was several hundred metres across, and the wall of white water was from one side to the other - it was quite scary." The passengers and crew were swept up to 200m inland, then took shelter by climbing trees until the water surges passed and they were rescued about 20 minutes latter. Six Australians staying at Macaroni Surf Resort along the beach were earlier feared missing but were located safe and well late yesterday afternoon. Residents reported shaking as far away as the West Sumatran provincial capital of Padang when the main quake struck.

    อัพเดท ซึนามิ - ตาย 154 สูญหาย 502

    Event: Tsunami
Location: MultiCountries Indonesia, Australia Tanahbalah, Pagai,Padang, Enggano, Cocos Island
    Number of Deads: 154 person(s)
    Number of Missing: 502 person(s)

Situation: Planes and helicopters delivering rescuers, medicine and other supplies landed for the first time Wednesday on remote Indonesian islands that were pounded by a 10-foot (3-meter) tsunami, sweeping away villages and killing at least 154 people. For days, rough seas and bad weather have hampered relief operations, leaving residents to fend for themselves. With not enough people to dig graves, corpses littered beaches and roads, according to district chief, Edison Salelo Baja. Fisherman were scouring waters in search of survivors. The fault line that ruptured Monday on Sumatra island's coast also caused the 2004 quake and monster Indian Ocean tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries. Disaster officials were still trying to reach more than a dozen villages on the hardest hit Mentawai islands - a popular surfer's destination that is usually reachable only by a 12-hour boat ride. But they were preparing for the worst Wednesday, with hundreds of body bags being sent to the scene, said Mujiharto, who heads the Health Ministry's crisis center. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, meanwhile, cut short a state visit to Vietnam to deal with two major disasters that struck Indonesian in less than 24 hours. The country's most volatile volcano, Mount Merapi, 800 miles (1,300 kilometers) to the east, erupted at dusk Tuesday, sending up sea

    จำนวนผู้เสียชีวิตจากซึนามิ จากแผ่นดินไหวอินโด 7.7 เพิ่มเป็น 272 คน

    Event: Tsunami
Location: MultiCountries Indonesia, Australia Tanahbalah, Pagai,Padang, Enggano, Cocos Island
    Number of Deads: 272 person(s)
    Number of Missing: 400 person(s)

Situation: At least 272 people are dead and more than 400 are missing after a tsunami swept through a string of remote Indonesian islands, a local official says. Disaster official Ade Edward updated the death toll late Wednesday, after planes full of emergency workers and relief supplies reached some of the affected communities. A 7.7-magnitude earthquake Monday triggered the three-metre wave that hit several remote islands, flowing into villages and washing homes into the water. Bad weather and rough seas slowed rescue efforts, and made delivering relief supplies a challenge. Ships full of food, tents and medical staff are headed to the remote area, along with 15 doctors and 150 volunteers, the Jakarta Post reported. "Looking to the future, there is a risk of diseases like diarrhea and malaria," Jakarta-based freelance reporter Aubrey Belford said. Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is cutting short a visit to Vietnam to return to the country, where officials and scientists are also closely monitoring a volatile volcano that started erupting Tuesday. The president is expected to travel to Padang, West Sumatra, to assess the damage, the newspaper reported. The country's most volatile volcano, Mount Merapi, 1,300 kilometres to the east, started to erupt at dusk Tuesday as scientists warned that pressure building beneath its lava dome could trigger one of the most powerful blasts in years. At least 28 people were killed. The two disasters were not related, but they both fell along Indonesia's portion of the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a series of fault lines that are prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity stretching from the Western Hemisphere through Japan and Southeast Asia.
