One killed as freeway slabs collapse in Mumbai

One person was killed and eight were injured when 13 slabs of the under-construction Eastern Freeway collapsed near Shanti Nagar in Wadala here late on Thursday night.
Rescue operations were going on when last reports came in even as the fire brigade and the police did not deny the possibility of some more persons being trapped under the debris.
Officials denied initial media reports that it was the monorail slabs which gave way. But due to the absence of any officials of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) at the site, it could not be confirmed initially. Officials of the Fire Brigade, off the record, told The Hindu that the slabs of the freeway, a 16-km stretch which is slated to connect the eastern Express Highway to South Mumbai’s Colaba region, fell down.
At least four vehicles including an oil furnace tanker and a concrete mixer were crushed under the slabs. The oil from the tanker leaked after the tanker broke open, and spilled on the entire stretch of road nearby.
The names of the dead or the injured could not be known immediately. The injured were rushed to the Lokmanya Tilak Hospital and the King Edward Memorial Hospital.
“The sections between two pillars of the freeway collapsed at around 9.15 pm. We know that at least four vehicles are trapped inside. They include one Maruti car, one Meru cab, a concrete mixer and a furnace oil tanker. We have called for cranes to relocate the slabs, as they will have to be lifted for the vehicles under them to be freed,” a Fire Brigade official told The Hindu.
Local residents said the slabs had loosened in the past few days. “They were tied by a rope. The rope probably gave way. As soon as we heard the noise, we came rushing,” wife of the local coporator, Uma Mahant Chaubey, told The Hindu.
She said the locals rescued nine persons from the debris while she called the ambulances and the Fire Brigade. Six fire engines were seen at the spot. Local politicians rushed to the spot and some people started shouting slogans against the administration.
The residents who were involved in the rescue operation said that at least three persons are feared dead. “We think at least three mechanics died. We recovered their body from the broken slabs. We all jumped on the slabs to see if someone was trapped inside, then we pulled out people. We had sent the people to hospital much before the ambulances and the Fire Brigade reached the spot,” Imtiyaz Sheikh and Melu Gupta, residents of Shanti Nagar slums here said.
Dilip Kawathkar of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) which is building the Eastern freeway said that one segment of the freeway collapsed. It is divided into three segments. It was the second segment, the Anik Panjrapole portion, that collapsed.
He clarified it was not the monorail but the freeway which is a roadway that was damaged. In May the MMRDA issued a press statement, after the visit of metropolitan commissioner Rahul Asthana, saying the Rs. 800-cr. project would be completed by this year-end.
“The Eastern Freeway was necessitated after the city of Mumbai began experiencing phenomenal growth in population, which was 11.9 million in 2001 and is expected to touch the 14-million mark in 2016,” said Mr. Asthana.

Drought widens, unlikely to yield through October

The National Weather Service issued this map along with its Seasonal Drought Outlook on Thursday.

A double-barreled dose of bad news came out Thursday: Not only did the drought worsen over the last week, but it's likely to widen and intensify through the end of October, according to the seasonal outlook prepared by government forecasters.

"Unfortunately, all indicators (short and medium-term, August, and August-October) favor above normal temperatures," the National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center said in its Seasonal Drought Outlook released Thursday.

"We don't see a reason to say it will improve," Kelly Helm Smith, a specialist at the National Drought Mitigation Center, told reporters. "I'm in the Midwest," she said, referring to her office at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, "it's really unpleasant."

The outlook noted that "a dramatic shift in the weather pattern" would be required "to provide significant relief to this drought, and most tools and models do not forecast this."

Drought could take hold in the northern plains by October, the Climate Prediction Center added.

Moreover, last week saw a continued "downward spiral of drought conditions," according to the weekly Drought Monitor issued Thursday.

Nearly 81 percent of the contiguous U.S. was "abnormally dry" or in drought, weather.com reported in analyzing the data, while 64 percent was in some degree of drought and 42 percent was "severe" or worse.

The monitor also noted these dire indicators for food production:

• 38 percent of the U.S. corn crop was in "poor to very poor condition" -- up from 30 percent a week ago;
• 30 percent of soybeans were in poor to very poor condition -- up from 27 percent.
• 54 percent of pastures and rangelands were in poor to very poor condition -- up from 50 percent and an all-time high since that measure began in 1995.
• Stream flows were at or near record low values across much of the Midwest and parts of the central Plains, West, Southeast, and even parts of New England.

Forecasters have called the drought the most widespread since 1956, though 1988 was worse in terms of crop losses due to an extremely dry year for the Midwest.

Experts said that could still change.

"It's too soon to know how much this one will cost" since farmers are still harvesting, Helm Smith told NBC News.

"There's a possibility that this could get worse," added Jake Crouch, an expert at the National Climatic Data Center.

"It's something to keep an eye on in the next couple of weeks," he told NBC News.

The federal government on Wednesday added 39 more counties to its drought disaster list, speeding up low-cost loans for farmers and ranchers. That's now 1,297 counties across 29 states with access to those loans.

The head of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack, said it was particularly painful for farmers because they planted for bumper crops, with many now instead potentially facing bankruptcy.

"Part of the problem we're facing is that weather conditions were so good at the beginning of the season that farmers got in the field early, and as a result this drought comes at a very difficult and painful time in their ability to have their crops have good yield," Vilsack told reporters Wednesday after briefing President Barack Obama on the drought.

"I get on my knees everyday and I'm saying an extra prayer right now," he added. "If I had a rain prayer or a rain dance I could do, I would do it."

Sinkhole opens up on I-70 near Idaho Springs, Colorado

Denver - The Colorado Department of Transportation closed one eastbound lane of I-70 near Idaho Springs after a large sinkhole opened up Thursday afternoon.

Crews have been working to repair the hole since 1 p.m. CDOT says travelers should expect long delays through the Idaho Springs area.

A possible alternate route: Highway 9 to U.S. Highway 285. It's not clear how long the lane will be closed.

In fact, there is a basalt road that runs along the bottom of the Pacific Ocean which connects these islands under hundreds of feet of water.[/FONT]

[FONT=Calibri, sans-serif]And if that's not enough, Hoffman shares the discovery of the Ari Marshall expedition in 1977. The team discovered a smaller pyramid off Cay Sal in the Bahamas. Marshall snapped underwater photos of the pyramid that's submerged beneath 150 feet of water.[/FONT]
[FONT=Calibri, sans-serif]According to Marshall's account the mystery pyramid glows. He also reported the water around the pyramid was luminescent and glistening white water flowed out of openings in the pyramid.[/FONT]
[FONT=Calibri, sans-serif]Despite the water at that depth being dark (not much light reaches that far down), the water surrounding the amazing pyramid was lit by the glow from the structure and appeared like a phosphoresent green color.[/FONT]

[FONT=Calibri, sans-serif]If Atlantis did exist, it probably existed during the end of the last Ice Age. The story of its sinking relates to the massive floods and rising ocean when the oversized Arctic icecap suddenly receded with catastrophic results for much of the Northern Hemisphere.[/FONT]

</td> </tr> <tr> <td colspan="3" style="PADDING: 10px; BORDER-LEFT:gray 1px solid;BORDER-RIGHT:gray 1px solid;" align="center" width="100%"> พายุดีเปรชันได้ทวีกำลังขึ้นเป็นพายุโซนร้อน”วีเซนเต” (VICENTE) แล้ว มีศูนย์กลางบริเวณทะเลจีนใต้ตอนบน ห่างจากเกาะฮ่องกงทางตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ประมาณ 300 กิโลเมตร หรือที่ละติจูด 19.5 องศาเหนือ ลองจิจูด 116.2 องศาตะวันออก โดยพายุนี้มีแนวโน้มเคลื่อนตัวทางตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือด้วยความเร็ว 20 กิโลเมตรต่อชั่วโมงผ่านทางตอนใต้ของประเทศจีน ขอให้ผู้ที่จะเดินทางไปยังบริเวณดังกล่าวตรวจสอบสภาพอากาศก่อนออกเดินทางใน ระยะนี้
สำหรับ มรสุมตะวันตกเฉียงใต้กำลังปานกลางที่พัดปกคลุมทะเลอันดามัน ประเทศไทย และอ่าวไทย
มีกำลังแรงขึ้น ทำให้ทั่วประเทศมีฝนเพิ่มขึ้นในระยะ 3-4 วันนี้
