    SUBSIDING METEOR SHOWER: After two days of strong activity, the Perseid meteor shower is finally subsiding. For much of August 12-13, meteor rates exceeded 100 per hour. Now, according to worldwide observers, activity is only half that and continues to drop.

    "I went out to Snowy Range in search of dark skies for the Perseids," says Kingham. "I wanted something special for the foreground and I knew the Snowies faced in the perfect direction to create this composite image. I started shooting at 10pm and didn't stop until 5 am, I had to change my battery every 2 hours which made for a long night. The moon rose around 1 am to light up the mountain range."

    NASA STEREO Observes One of the Fastest CMEs On Record

    ScienceDaily (Aug. 13, 2012) — On July 23, 2012, a massive cloud of solar material erupted off the sun's right side, zooming out into space, passing one of NASA's Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO) spacecraft along the way. Using the STEREO data, scientists at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. clocked this giant cloud, known as a coronal mass ejection, or CME, as traveling between 1,800 and 2,200 miles per second as it left the sun.

    Conversations began to buzz and the emails to fly: this was the fastest CME ever observed by STEREO, which since its launch in 2006 has helped make CME speed measurements much more precise. Such an unusually strong bout of space weather gives scientists an opportunity to observe how these events affect the space around the sun, as well as to improve their understanding of what causes them.
    "Between 1,800 and 2,200 miles per second puts it without question as one of the top five CMEs ever measured by any spacecraft," says solar scientist Alex Young at Goddard. "And if it's at the top of that velocity range it's probably the fastest."
    The STEREO mission consists of two spacecraft with orbits that for most of their journey give them views of the sun that cannot be had from Earth. Watching the sun from all sides helps improve our understanding of how events around the sun are connected, as well as gives us glimpses of activity we might not otherwise see. On July 23, STEREO-A lay -- from Earth's perspective -- to the right side and a little behind the sun, the perfect place for seeing this CME, which would otherwise have been hard to measure from Earth. The Solar Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), an ESA and NASA mission, also observed the CME. It is the combination of observations from both missions that helps make scientists confident in the large velocities they measured for this event.
    Measuring a CME at this speed, traveling in a direction safely away from Earth, represents a fantastic opportunity for researchers studying the sun's effects. Rebekah Evans is a space scientist working at Goddard's Space Weather Lab, which works to improve models that could some day be used to improve predictions of space weather and its effects. She says that the team categorizes CMEs for their research in terms of their speed, with the fastest ones -- such as this one -- labeled "ER" for Extremely Rare.
    "Seeing a CME this fast, really is so unusual," says Evans. "And now we have this great chance to study this powerful space weather, to better understand what causes these great explosions, and to improve our models to incorporate what happens during events as rare as these."
    Orbiting the sun some 89,000,000 miles away, STEREO-A could observe the speed of the CME as it burst from the sun, and it provided even more data some 17 hours later as the CME physically swept by -- having slowed down by then to about 750 miles per second. STEREO has instruments to measure the magnetic field strength, which in this case was four times as strong as the most common CMEs. When a CME with strong magnetic fields arrives near Earth, it can cause something called a geomagnetic storm that disrupts Earth's own magnetic environment and can potentially affect satellite operations or in worst-case scenarios induce electric currents in the ground that can affect power grids.
    "We measure magnetic fields in 'Tesla' and this CME was 80 nanoTesla," says Antti Pulkkinen, who is also a space weather scientist at Goddard. "This magnetic field is substantially larger even than the CMEs that caused large geomagnetic storms near Earth in October 2003. We call those storms the Halloween storms and scientists still study them to this day."
    While large, this measurement of the magnetic field is still smaller than one of the greatest space weather events on record, the Carrington Event of 1859, during which the magnetic fields at Earth measured 110 nanoTesla.
    When the CME passes over one of the STEREO spacecraft, the instruments can also measure the direction in which the magnetic field points -- a crucial data point since it is the southward pointing magnetic fields in a CME that travel in the opposite direction of Earth's own magnetic fields and thus can cause the most disruption. This CME traveled with an unusually large southward magnetic field of 40 nanoTesla that stayed steady for several hours.
    The event also pushed a burst of fast protons out from the sun. The number of charged particles near STEREO jumped 100,000 times within an hour of the CME's start. When such bursts of solar particles invade Earth's magnetic field they are referred to as a solar radiation storm, and they can block high frequency radio communications as used, for example, by airline pilots. Like the CME, this solar energetic particle (SEP) event is also the most intense ever measured by STEREO. While the CME was not directed toward Earth, the SEP did -- at a much lower intensity than at STEREO -- affect Earth as well, offering scientists a chance to study how such events can widen so dramatically as they travel through space.
    Evans points out that all of this solar activity was produced by a specific active region that NASA's space weather scientists had been watching for three weeks before the super fast eruption on July 23.
    "That active region was called AR 1520, and it produced four fairly fast CME's in Earth's direction before it rotated out of sight off the right limb of the sun," says Evans. "So even though the region had released multiple CMEs and even had an X-class flare, its strength kept increasing over time to eventually produce this giant explosion. To try to understand how that change happens makes for very exciting research."
    STEREO is but one of several missions that observe the sun constantly, and the data is always interesting as there is much to be learned from observing the quiet sun as well as an active one. But the sun displays an activity cycle during which it gets more active approximately every 11 years as it heads toward what's called "solar maximum." The next solar maximum is currently predicted for 2013. We can expect more and more space weather events until then, and each one will help scientists better understand the sun and how its effects can permeate the entire solar system.

    Vast Sea of Pumic North of New Zealand

    The Royal New Zealand Air Force has spotted a raft of floating volcanic rock in the South Pacific, covering 10,000 sq miles of ocean north of New Zealand. The volcanic rock, known as pumice, is created when lava from an underwater volcano comes in contact with seawater. New Zealand researchers are unclear on which undersea volcano caused this event.

    A mass of small volcanic rocks nearly the size of Belgiumwas discovered floating off the coast of New Zealand. The stretch of pumice rocks was first spotted this week by a New Zealand air force plane about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) northeast of Auckland.

    Magnitude 7.7 Quake Hits North of Japan

    A large earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.7 hit north of Japan on Tuesday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

    Volcano Grows at Astounding Rate

    An astounding pulse of destruction and growth at an underwater volcano north of New Zealand has provided a new insight into the behavior of submarine mountains. It added about 8.75 million cubic meters of rock to its summit in just five days.

    The Monowai seamount, which lies at the intersection of the Pacific and Indo-Australian tectonic plates at the Tonga-Kermadec subduction zone, underwent one of the fastest episodes of volcano growth documented on Earth. New lava flows raised that area by 79.1 meters, while part of the volcano's summit collapsed by as much as 18.8 meters. Most striking was the creation of an entirely new volcanic cone.

    Canary Islands 'El Hierro' Begins to Rumble

    During the past days, the number of quakes beneath El Hierro has shown an increase. Since August 7th, ten small quakes have been recorded at depths mostly between 10-22 km - which is shallower than during the seismic swarm in late June-early July.

    "Super Volcano", Global Danger, Lurks Near Pompeii

    Scientists plan to drill 3.5 km (2.2 miles) below the surface to monitor the huge chamber of molten rock near Pompeii and give early warning of any eruption from a 13-km-wide collapsed volcanic caldera.

    Source of Mysterious Pumice 'Raft' in Pacific Found, NASA Says

    The source of an enormous floating mass of pumice spotted this week in the South Pacific Ocean off the coast of New Zealand has been discovered: NASA satellite images and other sleuthing science have pinpointed an erupting undersea volcano called the Havre Seamount as the culprit.

    Many had speculated the Monowai seamount was the source, however, scientists have now ruled it out: An airline pilot reported seeing pumice as early as Aug. 1, according to a statement by NASA. Monowai is several hundred miles to the north of the pumice raft, and it was known to have erupted on Aug. 3rd.

    Vast Sea of Pumic North of New Zealand
    The Royal New Zealand Air Force has spotted a raft of floating volcanic rock in the South Pacific, covering 10,000 sq miles of ocean north of New Zealand. The volcanic rock, known as pumice, is created when lava from an underwater volcano comes in contact with seawater. New Zealand researchers are unclear on which undersea volcano caused this event.​

    A mass of small volcanic rocks nearly the size of Belgiumwas discovered floating off the coast of New Zealand. The stretch of pumice rocks was first spotted this week by a New Zealand air force plane about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) northeast of Auckland.

    Volcano Grows at Astounding Rate
    An astounding pulse of destruction and growth at an underwater volcano north of New Zealand has provided a new insight into the behavior of submarine mountains. It added about 8.75 million cubic meters of rock to its summit in just five days.​

    The Monowai seamount, which lies at the intersection of the Pacific and Indo-Australian tectonic plates at the Tonga-Kermadec subduction zone, underwent one of the fastest episodes of volcano growth documented on Earth. New lava flows raised that area by 79.1 meters, while part of the volcano's summit collapsed by as much as 18.8 meters. Most striking was the creation of an entirely new volcanic cone.

    Canary Islands 'El Hierro' Begins to Rumble
    During the past days, the number of quakes beneath El Hierro has shown an increase. Since August 7th, ten small quakes have been recorded at depths mostly between 10-22 km - which is shallower than during the seismic swarm in late June-early July.​

    "Super Volcano", Global Danger, Lurks Near Pompeii
    Scientists plan to drill 3.5 km (2.2 miles) below the surface to monitor the huge chamber of molten rock near Pompeii and give early warning of any eruption from a 13-km-wide collapsed volcanic caldera.​

    Source of Mysterious Pumice 'Raft' in Pacific Found, NASA Says
    The source of an enormous floating mass of pumice spotted this week in the South Pacific Ocean off the coast of New Zealand has been discovered: NASA satellite images and other sleuthing science have pinpointed an erupting undersea volcano called the Havre Seamount as the culprit.​

    Many had speculated the Monowai seamount was the source, however, scientists have now ruled it out: An airline pilot reported seeing pumice as early as Aug. 1, according to a statement by NASA.     What happens to animals and humans during the process leading to a full magnetic flip?First, remember it is a process which takes a few thousand years. With each passing decade, the intensity increases as the Earth's magnetic field decreases. Current data suggests we are far along the process with just a few decades away from a full reversal.

    This would suggest we are deep into the cycle, and far enough along (perhaps within the next couple of decades) to witness (and sense) magnetic north bouncing around the northern hemisphere above 60° latitude and swing between 30° east and 30° west longitudes. Furthermore, there will be some of you who are young enough to witness a more pronounced swing in both latitude and longitude within the next 50-60 years.

    There currently is not enough statistics to say how fast the end swings occur just prior to a full reversal. What has been documented is the closer to zero point, the faster the swings occur. I would be surprised it the final episode happened within the next century - but who knows?

    The fact remains - WE humans and animals will feel the effects NOW.     Due to the increasing geomagnetic transitional period as described above, magnetic ley-lines are reorienting into various and unpredictable north-south east-west zones. For migrating species, the problem appears to be worsening, causing great concern to biologists and zoologist. Increasing numbers of whales and dolphins are also getting disoriented to the point where they get stranded in shallows. Mammals that have been rescued and directed back to sea are found stranded once again, sometimes on the same beach, as if being guided.

    It is now known that migrant species such as birds, sea turtles, dolphins, whales, several fish species such as salmon and trout, possess a mineral called magnetite. Experiments in a controlled environment have definitively proven the existence of an internal compass. Species that rely on Earth's magnetic field are expected to go through a period of chaos of which many species may not survive.

    Scientific records from deep sea core samples which include "faunal", suggest historical geomagnetic reversals appear to co-exist with period extinctions. Today, as the chaotic shifting of the geomagnetic field increases, disorientation among these creatures is escalating at an alarming pace.

    As part of a recent team of scientists whose research has been published in the scientific journal 'Nature', Dr. Oleg Shumilov made the following statement: "If animals can sense the Earth's magnetic field; so why not people." Perhaps his findings are somehow related to a human's reaction to "disorientation".

    Lead researcher Robert J. Gegear, from the Department of Neurobiology, University of Massachusetts Medical School highlights their findings: "Our study suggests humans may be genetically pre-disposed to the influence by geomagnetic flux as it relates to the Earth's magnetic field and charged particles such as solar flares, coronal mass ejections, gamma rays, and galactic cosmic rays."

    There is consistent evidence of an influence of geomagnetic fields to the human visual system. Moreover, it has been proposed recently that light-sensitive magnetic responses are not only used for directional information, but may also aid in a visual sense-of-direction.

    The pineal gland, which regulates melatonin production and the circadian 24 hour rhythm, is sensitive to magnetic fields.     A new report from the National Research Council presents a prioritized program that will advance scientific understanding of the Sun, Sun-Earth connections and the origins of "space weather," and the Sun's interactions with other bodies in the solar system.

    Why do you think the NRC has become so alarmed as to put out a "prioritized and immediate" request from NASA, NSF, NOAA, Univ. of Colo. Atmospheric and Space Physics, Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) and Johns Hopkins University of Applied Physics?

    Again, this is one of those moments when the hair on the back of my neck stands straight up. Perhaps it is partly due to affirmation of my research being 'spot-on'. So why is there no feeling of running around the office slapping 'high-fives'? Answer: Because my research IS 'spot-on'.

    Believe me, there is no sense of ego in my statement, but more a sense of "have I done all I can to relay breaking news research" which has been coming in so fast over the last two months, I often have trouble heading for the bed wondering if I forgot something to pass on. I'll let you in on a little secret; the only way I have been able to get some sleep is when I lay down with my 4 yr old daughter. She brings me right down to Earth in a flash. In less than a minute, nothing matters in the whole world than my family. Alexa, Sophia, and my wife Elly - they are my grounding force. I'm not exactly sure why I'm telling you this - maybe it's my affirmation for everyone (including me) to remember 'family first - everything else second'.

    No, this isn't my 'blow-the-trumpet' moment - and no, nothing without warning is about to happen. However, it would be wise to pay close attention to news and events unfolding. Perhaps one of the main reasons most of you have stayed with me over the years, is the fact that I have been fortunate to be accepted in the guarded halls of several government agencies and universities. The news and information I pass on to you is not always pleasant, but you know it is sound and carries the weight of credibility.

    NRC - IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUESTED​

    Immediate recommended actions put forth by the NRC include completion of projects in the current program of NASA and the National Science Foundation, to allow "augmentation"of NASA and NSF enabling programs for "acceleration and expansion" of NASA's Heliophysics Explorer Program.

    'Augmentation': to amplify, accelerate, expand, heighten, intensify, reinforce, and strengthen.

    'Heliophysics': The scientific study of the Sun-Earth connection. This includes the study of Earth's magnetic field, the Earth's core - outer core - mantle - and plate tectonics. This also includes (and perhaps is directed toward) the Earth's magnetic field decrease, magnetic field excursions and final reversal, charged particle radiation which encompasses cosmic rays, gamma rays, solar flares, coronal mass ejections, and coronal hole filament.

    The Earth's magnetic field protects all living things from radiation exposure - needless to say, with a weakening field adjustments will need to be made. No, it does not mean we are all going to die from radiation. If that were true, none of us - animal-bird-reptile would be here today. Remember, this has happened many times in Earth's history - and somehow we always adapt.

    Now, if what I just laid out does not tell you of the concern space and geological agencies have over the Sun-Earth connection, perhaps this next statement will.

    Daniel Baker, director of the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and chair of the committee states: "These advances put forth by the NRC will support critical national needs for information that can be used to anticipate, recognize, and mitigate space weather effects that are adverse to human life and the technological systems society depends upon."

    Solar activity was high over the last 30 hours, with the most active region being sunspot region 1548. The largest events from this region were an M5.5 at 18/0102, followed by M1.9 at 0323 UT - M2.1 at 1607 UT - M1.1 at 2254 UT - M1.4 at 2322 UT. The same region also produced several C-class events. Included in this series of 7 M-flares were two events on August 17th - an M2.4 at 13.19 UT and M1.0 at 17:20 UT.

    CMEs (coronal mass ejections) were associated with these flares but no geomagnetic repercussions are expected. Additional M-class flares are expected along with a risk for an isolated major flare (X class).

    A filament eruption occurred near region 1543
    around 23:30 UT on Aug. 17th, triggering a CME which is not expected to be geoffective. Geomagnetic activity is expected to be active due to a coronal hole becoming hitting Earth's magnetic field.
