หลังได้รับตำแหน่งสันตะปาปาเมื่อวันที่ 13 มีนาคม โป๊ปฟรานซิสทรงเลือกที่จะประทับอยู่ในห้องเล็กๆ ในบ้านพักที่แออัด แทนที่จะอาศัยอยู่ใน วังหรูหรา ซึ่งรายล้อมไปด้วยสำนักงานบริหารส่วนกลางของวาติกัน

September 6, 2013 – JAPAN – A seamount in the northwestern Pacific Ocean may be the largest volcano on Earth, and could rival the largest in the solar system — the mighty Olympus Mons on Mars — according to oceanographers. Tamu Massif, a well-known seamount off Japan, turns out to be one continuous shield volcano, about the size of New Mexico or the British Isles, said geophysicist William W. Sager, lead author of a study published online Thursday in the journal Nature Geoscience. Sager and team members had long ago given names to the formations jutting up from the Shatsky Rise, a California-sized oceanic plateau southeast of Japan. Tamu, the largest of three major features, stands for Texas A&M University, where Sager conducted his research for two decades before moving recently to the University of Houston. Tens of thousands of seamounts pock the ocean floors planet-wide, and others may be larger, such as the Ontong Java Plateau near the Solomon Islands and the Kerguelen Plateau in the southern Indian Ocean. But thus far, none appears to be a single basalt shield volcano, but rather a composite of many such volcanoes, Sager said. “One of the real things you have as a marine geologist or marine geophysicist is that these things have found a good place to hide,”

Sager said. “It’s easier to study something on the surface of Mars in many ways than it is to study something that’s right out there in the ocean. It’s not like we didn’t know that there was something out there. It’s just taken generations to get the time and money and to focus on it and get out there and study it.” Sager’s team drilled core samples from the volcano, jutting from the ocean floor about 4 miles deep. Tamu rises about as high as many peaks of the Sierra Nevada – more than 13,000 feet. But much of its mass has sunk into the ocean crust, making it far shorter than Olympus Mons, which towers about 13 miles from the more rigid Martian surface. But Tamu appears to have a larger base. Olympus Mons is about 374 miles in diameter, according to NASA; Tamu spans about 403 miles at its widest point and covers about 8,000 more square miles, according to the study. Sager was testing two competing theories of how these undersea volcanoes form. One holds that they are like continental volcanoes – the product of a rising plume of magma. Another, however, holds that the upper mantle melts without such a “hot spot” when there is a fracture or spread of the ocean lithosphere. The question remains unresolved while geochronologists study the rock samples. “I’m still sitting on the fence,” said Sager. “Shatsky Rise sits right along a trace of a triple junction where mid-ocean ridges came together, but it also looks like what you’d expect it to look like if it was this big blob of hot material coming up.”

However the lava flowed, it flowed quickly and spread rapidly, according to the study. “We think that these things formed rapidly, within a million years or two – that’s rapidly to a geologist – and then they’re done, but we don’t know that for sure,” said Sager. And all of the lava flow, some of it 75 feet thick, appears to trace back to one central point of origin that has a depression at its apex. “We can see that on any crossing that we make, they all seem to come from the center and go outward,” Sager said of the basalt flows. “That’s the basis of the finding that it’s one big volcano.” Still, if you could stand on Tamu, you would not be able to discern its full profile, and might not even know which way is up. Its slopes are less than a degree – most volcanoes have slopes greater than 5 degrees. It’s unlikely that Tamu ever was an island, even shortly after it formed about 145 million years ago. Fossils of shallow-water creatures in Tamu’s sediments indicate it came close to broaching the ocean surface before the ocean lithosphere sank to its present depth, Sager said. –LA Times

Vestiges of the interstellar wind flowing into what’s called the heliosphere — the vast bubble filled by the sun’s own constant flow of particles, the solar wind – is one of the ways scientists can observe what lies just outside of our own home, in the galactic cloud through which the solar system travels. The heliosphere is situated near the inside edge of an interstellar cloud and the two move past each other at a velocity of 50,000 miles per hour. This motion creates a wind of neutral interstellar atoms blowing past Earth, of which helium is the easiest to measure.

“Because the sun is moving though this cloud, interstellar atoms penetrate into the solar system,” said Priscilla Frisch, an astrophysicist at the University of Chicago, Illinois and the lead author on the paper. “The charged particles in the interstellar wind don’t do a good job of reaching the inner solar system, but many of the atoms in the wind are neutral. These can penetrate close to Earth and can be measured.”

Frisch became interested in this subject when results in January 2012 from NASA’s Interstellar Boundary Explorer, or IBEX, showed that the interstellar wind was entering the heliosphere from a slightly different direction than had been observed by NASA’s Ulysses mission in the 1990s. Frisch and her colleagues set out to gather as much evidence from as many sources as they could to determine whether the newer instruments simply provided more accurate results, or whether the wind direction itself changed over the years.

The earliest historical data on the interstellar wind comes from the 1970s from the U.S. Department of Defense’s Space Test Program 72-1 and SOLRAD 11B, NASA’s Mariner, and the Soviet Prognoz 6. While instruments have improved since the 1970s, comparing information from several sets of observations helped the researchers gain confidence in results from that early data. The team went on to look at another seven data sets including the Ulysses information from 1990 to 2001, and more recent data from IBEX, as well as four other NASA missions: the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory, or STEREO, the Advanced Composition Explorer, or ACE, the Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer, and the MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging mission, or MESSENGER, currently in orbit around Mercury. The eleventh set of observations came from the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency’s Nuzomi.

“The direction of the wind obtained from the most recent data does not agree with the direction obtained from the earlier measurements, suggesting that the wind itself has changed over time,” said Eric Christian, the IBEX mission scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. “It’s an intriguing result, which relied on looking at a suite of data measured in a bunch of different ways.”

The various sets of observations relied on three different methods to measure the incoming interstellar wind. IBEX and Ulysses directly measure neutral helium atoms as they coursed through the inner solar system. IBEX’s measurements are made close to Earth, while Ulysses’ measurements reach out to the orbit of Jupiter.

The earliest measurements in the 1970s observed fluorescence that occurs when the extreme ultraviolet radiation coming from the sun scatters off the interstellar helium wind passing by the sun. Neutral helium atoms get caught by the sun’s gravity, forming a focusing cone. As radiation from the sun bounces off these atoms, they give off light. Measuring the light provides information about the helium inflow direction.

Does fracking cause earthquakes?

More than 100 earthquakes in 2011 in Youngstown, Ohio, were caused by fracking, says a new study, adding to past research that has linked fracking to earthquakes in Oklahoma and Arkansas.

Youngstown is located over the Marcellus Shale, a geological formation that scientists estimate contains 489 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Before January 2011, it had never felt an earthquake, at least not since record-keeping began in 1776. But two weeks after the Northstar 1 well started pumping fluid into the ground, the tremors began. Though most were too small to feel, by December 2011 seismometers in the town had recorded a magnitude 3.9 quake.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources quickly responded, "The seismic events are not a direct result of fracking." But the well was shut down for investigation, after which the tremors stopped. This week's report, published in the Journal of Geophysical Research, contradicts the director's claim.

The earthquakes "were induced by the fluid injection at Northstar 1," says study author Won Young Kim of Columbia University. Researchers say 167 distinct earthquakes resulted from that one well.

How did the researchers determine that Northstar 1 was to blame? For one, they found that the frequency and intensity of the quakes altered in accordance with the daily pressure levels in the well. Also, the epicenter of each of the quakes was either at the well or along the fault line that the well was connected to.

The well was pumping water into the ground at a rate of about 1,300 gallons per hour. National Journal's Brian Resnick explains it like this:

What seemed to happen was that the high-pressure fluid moved along a preexisting fault in a west-southwest direction (away from the well), increasing pressure on the rock formations as it progressed. This decreased the resistance the rock had to faulting, which increased the risk of an earthquake. And the location of the seismic activity moved as the the fluid did, along the fault line. When the pumping at the well stopped, the study concludes, the earthquakes waned. [National Journal]

Resnick also points out that Northstar 1 was the only such well in Ohio during that time period to cause any quakes. So what makes Youngstown so vulnerable?

It seems that the Ohio's Department of Natural Resources didn't realize that a fault line ran beneath the well. "Ironically, the data needed to make that determination was already available," explains The Energy Collective, but because funds were short, and no federal regulations required the data, it eluded the state and the builders.

"It’s a classic look at what can happen when a new industry booms, and only as it is proliferates unregulated does the collateral damage become apparent," says The New Republic. "At least Ohio is experimenting with solutions."

12 years ago today during the previous solar maximum the southern hemisphere was full of very large flare producing sunspot clusters. Today during a period that was previously predicted to be the current solar maximum, there is quite a contrast and lack of activity. Our sun is currently in one of the many observed quiet spells. With the sun's poles in the process of doing a magnetic flip, an event that takes place roughly every 11 years during solar maximum, what will the sun have in store for us during second half of solar max? Us sky watchers are hoping for more large sunspots, solar flares, coronal mass ejections and whatever else the sun can throw our way. And again we wait patiently.

แม้จะมีการตั้งกำแพงคอนกรีต กั้นพื้นที่โรงไฟฟ้าโดยรอบแล้ว แต่ก็ยังไม่สามารถกักน้ำปนเปื้อนเหล่านี้ให้ไหลซึมลงไปใต้ดินได้ ดังนั้น เทปโกจึงต้องหาวิธีการใหม่ในการกักน้ำพิษเหล่านี้ไว้ในพื้นที่จำกัดและเหมาะสม และค้นพบว่าที่แหล่งเก็บกากกัมมันตรังสีของห้องปฏิบัติการแห่งชาติโอค ริดจ์ รัฐเทนเนสซี สหรัฐอเมริกา ได้ใช้วิธีการสร้างกำแพงน้ำแข็งความยาว 100 เมตร ลึกลงไปใต้ดิน 10 เมตร ป้องกันไม่ให้น้ำปนเปื้อนกัมมันตรังสีรั่วไหลออกสู่สิ่งแวดล้อมเป็นผลสำเร็จตั้งแต่ปี 2539 จึงเลือกที่จะใช้วิธีนี้กับโรงไฟฟ้าพิการของบริษัทด้วยเช่นกัน
เทปโกได้มอบหมายให้บริษัท คาจิมา คอร์ป เป็นผู้ก่อสร้างกำแพงน้ำแข็งความยาว 1.4 กิโลเมตร ลึก 30 เมตรลงไปถึงชั้นดินโคลนที่เป็นแหล่งน้ำใต้ดิน เพื่อป้องกันไม่ให้มีน้ำจากในโรงไฟฟ้าและน้ำใต้ดินไหลซึมเข้ามาในโรงไฟฟ้าได้อีกต่อไป โดยบริษัทคาจิมา ได้เสนอแผนการสร้างกำแพงน้ำแข็งต่อคณะกรรมการผู้เชี่ยวชาญแห่งสำนักงานกำกับดูแลนิวเคลียร์ของญี่ปุ่นตั้งแต่เดือนเมษายนที่ผ่านมา และได้รับอนุมัติแผนเมื่อเดือนพฤษภาคม
การสร้างกำแพงน้ำแข็งจะใช้วิธีการเจาะลงไปในผืนดินและวางท่อสำหรับนำสารหล่อเย็นลงไปในพื้นดิน โดยมีระยะห่างระหว่างท่อ 1 เมตร จนครบแนว 1.4 กิโลเมตรรอบโรงไฟฟ้า ก่อนที่จะเดินเครื่องสร้างความเย็น 14 เครื่อง ที่ใช้กำลังขับราว 6,000 แรงม้า เพื่อสร้างความเย็นระดับติดลบ 20-40 องศาเซลเซียส ผ่านลงไปในท่อและทำให้น้ำและของเหลวในบริเวณใกล้เคียงกับท่อก่อตัวเป็นกำแพงน้ำแข็งขนาดใหญ่หนาราว 2 เมตรที่มนุษย์สร้างขึ้นมาเลียนแบบชั้นดินน้ำแข็งที่เรียกว่า "เพอร์มาฟรอสท์" ในบริเวณทุ่งทุนดราในประเทศรัสเซีย
กำแพงน้ำแข็งชนิดนี้จะทำให้น้ำที่ไหลมากระทบก่อตัวเป็นน้ำแข็งพอกหนาขึ้น ไม่ว่าจะเป็นน้ำจากในหรือนอกกำแพง ช่วยเสริมความหนาของกำแพงป้องกันไม่ให้น้ำปนเปื้อนสารกัมมันตรังสีสัมผัสกับน้ำใต้ดินภายนอก และกำแพงน้ำแข็งที่โรงไฟฟ้าฟูกูชิมะจะกลายเป็นกำแพงน้ำแข็งที่มนุษย์สร้างขึ้นมาที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในโลก
อย่างไรก็ตาม การทำน้ำแข็งก็ต้องใช้พลังงานไฟฟ้าราว 4.5 เมกะวัตต์ต่อวันในการรักษาสภาพกำแพงน้ำแข็ง ซึ่งถือเป็นไฟฟ้าจำนวนมาก แต่ยังน้อยมากเมื่อเทียบกับพลังงานไฟฟ้าที่โรงไฟฟ้าแห่งนี้ผลิตขึ้นมาได้และเมื่อเทียบความคุ้มค่าในการป้องกันความเสียหายที่จะเกิดต่อมนุษย์หากน้ำปนเปื้อนสารกัมมันตรังสีรั่วไหลออกไปสู่สิ่งแวดล้อม เนื่องจากสิ่งมีชีวิตในทะเลทุกชนิดในบริเวณใกล้เคียงโรงไฟฟ้าจะได้รับสารกัมมันตรังสี และหากถูกจับมาเป็นอาหารก็จะกลายเป็นการเชื่อมต่อห่วงโซ่แห่งการกระจายสารกัมมันตรังสีที่เป็นต้นเหตุของโรคมะเร็งเม็ดเลือดในมนุษย์และโรคร้ายอีกหลายสิบชนิดไปยังมนุษย์ในที่สุด

 

'ญี่ปุ่น'เล็งปล่อยน้ำเปื้อนรังสีลงทะเล
เพื่อนบ้านสะดุ้ง 'ญี่ปุ่น' เผยคงต้องปล่อยน้ำเปรอะเปื้อนรังสีจากโรงไฟฟ้าฟูกูชิมะลงทะเลในที่สุด รับสถานการณ์ยังเปราะบาง เต็มไปด้วยความเสี่ยง

2 ก.ย. 56 นายชุนอิจิ ทานากะ ประธานสำนักงานกำกับดูแลนิวเคลียร์ญี่ปุ่น แถลงที่กรุงโตเกียวว่า บริษัทไฟฟ้าโตเกียว (เทปโก) ผู้ดำเนินงานโรงไฟฟ้านิวเคลียร์ฟูกูชิมะ ไดอิจิ ที่อยู่ระหว่างปลดระวาง ไม่อาจกักเก็บน้ำหล่อเย็นเตาปฏิกรณ์ปริมาณมหาศาลไว้ได้ตลอดไป และเกรงว่า การทิ้งหรือปล่อยน้ำรังสีเหล่านั้นลงทะเล จะไม่สามารถหลีกเลี่ยงได้ แต่จะผ่านการบำบัดให้การเปรอะเปื้อนรังสีอยู่ในระดับที่ยอมรับได้ตามมาตรฐานสากล
นายทานากะ ยอมรับว่า สถานการณ์โรงไฟฟ้าฟูกูชิมะ เปลี่ยนแปลงรายวัน และมีความเสี่ยงหลายอย่าง พร้อมกันนี้ได้กล่าวตำหนิการบริหารจัดการน้ำเปื้อนรังสีแบบชุ่ยๆ ของเทปโก และจำเป็นที่จะต้องตั้งกฎเข้มงวดมากขึ้น

ประเทศเพื่อนบ้านและชาวประมงท้องถิ่นแสดงความวิตกมานาน เรื่องการปล่อยน้ำเปรอะเปื้อนรังสี ซึ่งยังเป็นข้อถกเถียงเรื่องความปลอดภัยและเชื่อว่าบางส่วนได้ไหลลงทะเลแล้ว
วันเดียวกัน หนังสือพิมพ์ซันเค ในญี่ปุ่น รายงานว่า อัยการได้ตัดสินใจยกฟ้องเอาผิดอาญากับอดีตนายกรัฐมนตรีนาโอโตะ คัง เจ้าหน้าที่รัฐบาลจำนวนหนึ่งและบรรดาผู้บริหารเทปโก กรณีรับมือกับสถานการณ์วิกฤติหลังภัยพิบัติตามที่ประชาชนในท้องถิ่นได้ขอให้ยื่นฟ้อง เนื่องจากอัยการไม่มีหลักฐานเพียงพอสนับสนุนว่าปัญหาต่างๆเกิดจากการปฏิบัติหน้าที่โดยประมาท
อีกด้านหนึ่ง บริษัทไฟฟ้าคันไซ ได้เริ่มลดการผลิตไฟฟ้าที่เตาปฏิกรณ์หมายเลข 3 ของโรงไฟฟ้าโออิ จ.ฟูคูอิ ทางภาคตะวันตก เมื่อเวลา 17.00 น.ของวันจันทร์ และจะปิดเดินเครื่องสมบูรณ์ในเช้าตรู่วันอังคาร เพื่อเตรียมพร้อมสำหรับการตรวจสอบตามที่กฎหมายกำหนด ภายใน 13 เดือนนับจากเริ่มเดินเครื่อง
เตาปฏิกรณ์แห่งนี้ เป็นหนึ่งในสองแห่งเท่านั้นที่ยังผลิตกระแสไฟฟ้าอยู่ในญี่ปุ่นหลังเกิดวิกฤติโรงไฟฟ้าฟูกูชิมะ ส่วนอีกแห่งหนึ่งคือ เตาปฏิกรณ์หมายเลข 4 ที่โรงไฟฟ้าโออิเช่นกัน จะปิดเดินเครื่องในวันที่ 15 กันยายน และไม่แน่ชัดว่าเมื่อใดทั้งสองแห่งจะกลับมาเดินเครื่องอีกครั้ง เนื่องจากจะต้องผ่านขั้นตอนประเมินความปลอดภัยที่สำนักงานกำกับดูแลนิวเคลียร์เพิ่งร่างขึ้นมาใช้ใหม่ไม่นาน
เตาปฏิกรณ์สองแห่งนี้เพิ่งถูกเปิดใช้งานอีกครั้งเมื่อกรกฎาคมปีที่แล้ว ท่ามกลางกระแสคัดค้าน แม้ว่าได้ผ่านการตรวจสอบความปลอดภัยแล้วก็ตาม

รอยเตอร์ – ภูเขาไฟแห่งหนึ่งในรัฐอะแลสกาซึ่งปลดปล่อยลาวาและเถ้าถ่านในปริมาณน้อยออกมาอย่างต่อเนื่องตั้งแต่เดือนมิถุนายน เริ่มปะทุรุนแรงและพ่นเถ้าถ่านสูงขึ้นไปบนท้องฟ้ากว่า 4.8 กิโลเมตร เมื่อวานนี้(30) นักวิทยาศาสตร์ระบุ
ศูนย์สังเกตการณ์ภูเขาไฟอะแลสกาประกาศเตือนว่า การปะทุครั้งล่าสุดของภูเขาไฟเวอเนียมินอฟ ความสูง 2,507 เมตร และห่างจากเมืองแองเคอเรจไปทางตะวันตกเฉียงใต้ราว 805 กิโลเมตรนั้น ถือว่ารุนแรงที่สุดในฤดูร้อนปีนี้ และอาจจะทวีความรุนแรงขึ้นอีก
อย่างไรก็ดี นักวิทยาศาสตร์เชื่อว่าการปะทุไม่น่าจะเกี่ยวข้องกับเหตุแผ่นดินไหว 7.0 นอกชายฝั่งเกาะเอดัก (Adak) เมื่อวานนี้(30) โดยเกาะดังกล่าวเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของหมู่เกาะอะลูเชียน ซึ่งห่างจากภูเขาไฟเวอเนียมินอฟไปทางตะวันตกเฉียงใต้ประมาณ 800 ไมล์

After the earth's magnetic north moved recently when Nibiru enter our solar system, the ice began to melt. What was there now was the clear entrance to "hollow" earth. And yes, there is a race of beings there. That's not true, there are more than one, millions of beings. I will let most famous modern explorer, Admiral Byrd tell his story, as he did to the world when he returned from his trip to the center of the earth. The story was printed in newspapers, magazines and featured in a huge spread in The National Geographic with global news. Suddenly every copy of the story was gone, seized by the US government. If this is untrue, then how do you explain this history? If this isn't enough, I can show you other first hand accounts of men actually being there and describing a world identical to Byrd's.

The Inner Earth – My Secret Diary

I must write this diary in secrecy and obscurity. It concerns my Arctic flight of the nineteenth day of February in the year of Nineteen and Forty-Seven.
There comes a time when the rationality of men must fade into insignificance and one must accept the inevitability of the Truth! I am not at liberty to disclose the following documentation at this writing …perhaps it shall never see the light of public scrutiny, but I must do my duty and record here for all to read one day. In a world of greed and exploitation of certain of mankind can no longer suppress that which is truth.
Flight Log: Base Camp Arctic, 2/19/1947
06.00 Hours – All preparations are complete for our flight northward and we are airborne with full fuel tanks at 0610 Hours.
06.20 Hours – fuel mixture on starboard engine seems too rich, adjustment made and Pratt Whittneys are running smoothly.
07.30 Hours – Radio Check with base camp. All is well and radio reception is normal.
07.40 Hours – Note slight oil leak in starboard engine, oil pressure indicator seems normal, however.
08.00 Hours – Slight turbulence noted from easterly direction at altitude of 2321 feet, correction to 1700 feet, no further turbulence, but tail wind increases, slight adjustment in throttle controls, aircraft performing very well now.
08.15 Hours- Radio Check with base camp, situation normal.
08.30 Hours – Turbulence encountered again, increase altitude to 2900 feet, smooth flight conditions again.
09.10 Hours – Vast Ice and snow below, note coloration of yellowish nature, and disperse in a linear pattern. Altering course for a better examination of this color pattern below, note reddish or purple color also. Circle this area two full turns and return to assigned compass heading. Position check made again to Base Camp, and relay information concerning colorations in the Ice and snow below.
09.10 Hours – Both Magnetic and Gyro compasses beginning to gyrate and wobble, we are unable to hold our heading by instrumentation. Take bearing with Sun compass, yet all seems well. The controls are seemingly slow to respond and have sluggish quality, but there is no indication of Icing!
09.15 Hours – In the distance is what appears to be mountains.
0949 Hours – 29 minutes elapsed flight time from the first sighting of the mountains, it is no illusion. They are mountains and consisting of a small range that I have never seen before!
09.55 Hours – Altitude change to 2950 feet, encountering strong turbulence again.
10.00 Hours – We are crossing over the small mountain range and still proceeding northward as best as can be ascertained. Beyond the mountain range is what appears to be a valley with a small river or stream running through the center portion. There should be no green valley below! Something is definitely wrong and abnormal here! We should be over Ice and Snow! To the portside are great forests growing on the mountain slopes. Our navigation Instruments are still spinning, the gyroscope is oscillating back and forth!
10.05 Hours – I alter altitude to 1400 feet and execute a sharp left turn to better examine the valley below. It is green with either moss or a type of tight-knit grass. The Light here seems different. I cannot see the Sun anymore. We make another left turn and we spot what seems to be a large animal of some kind below us. It appears to be an elephant! NO!!! It looks more like a mammoth! This is incredible! Yet, there it is! Decrease altitude to 1000 feet and take binoculars to better examine the animal. It is confirmed – it is definitely a mammoth-like animal! Report this to Base Camp.
10.30 Hours – Encountering more rolling green hills now. The external temperature indicator reads 74 degrees Fahrenheit! Continuing on our heading now. Navigation instruments seem normal now. I am puzzled over their actions. Attempt to contact Base Camp. Radio is not functioning!
11.30 Hours – Countryside below is more level and normal (if I may use that word). Ahead we spot what seems to be a city!!!! This is impossible! Aircraft seems light and oddly buoyant. The controls refuse to respond!! My GOD!!! Off our port and starboard wings are a strange type of aircraft. They are closing rapidly alongside! They are disc-shaped and have a radiant quality to them.
They are close enough now to see the markings on them. It is a type of Swastika!!! This is fantastic. Where are we! What has happened. I tug at the controls again. They will not respond!!!! We are caught in an invisible vice grip of some type!
11.35 Hours – Our radio crackles and a voice comes through in English with what perhaps is a slight Nordic or Germanic accent! The message is: ‘Welcome, Admiral, to our Domain. We shall land you in exactly seven minutes! Relax, Admiral, you are in good hands.’ I note the engines of our plane have stopped running! The aircraft is under some strange control and is now turning itself. The controls are useless.
11.40 Hours – Another radio message received. We begin the landing process now, and in moments the plane shudders slightly, and begins a descent as though caught in some great unseen elevator! The downward motion is negligible, and we touch down with only a slight jolt!
11.45 Hours – I am making a hasty last entry in the Flight Log. Several men are approaching on foot toward our aircraft. They are tall with blond hair. In the distance is a large shimmering city pulsating with rainbow hues of color. I do not know what is going to happen now, but I see no signs of weapons on those approaching. I hear now a voice ordering me by name to open the cargo door. I comply.

From this point I write all the following events here from memory. It defies the imagination and would seem all but madness if it had not happened. The radioman and I are taken from the aircraft and we are received in a most cordial manner. We were then boarded on a small platform-like conveyance with no wheels! It moves us toward the glowing city with great swiftness. As we approach, the city seems to be made of a crystal material. Soon we arrive at a large building that is a type I have never seen before. It appears to be right out of the design board of Frank Lloyd Wright, or perhaps more correctly, out of a Buck Rogers setting!! We are given some type of warm beverage which tasted like nothing I have ever savored before. It is delicious.
After about ten minutes, two of our wondrous appearing Hosts come to our quarters and announce that I am to accompany them. I have no choice but to comply. I leave my Radioman behind and we walk a short distance and enter into what seems to be an elevator. We descend downward for some moments, the machine stops, and the door lifts silently upward! We then proceed down a long hallway that is lit by a rose-colored light that seems to be emanating from the very walls themselves!
One of the beings motions for us to stop before a great door. Over the door is an inscription that I cannot read. The great door slides noiselessly open and I am beckoned to enter. One of my Hosts speaks. “Have no fear, Admiral, you are to have an audience with the Master…”
I step inside and my eyes adjust to the beautiful coloration that seems to be filling the room completely. Then I begin to see my surroundings. What greeted my eyes is the most beautiful sight of my entire existence. It is in fact too beautiful and wondrous to describe. It is exquisite and delicate. I do not think there exists a Human term that can describe it in any detail with justice! My thoughts are interrupted in a cordial manner by a warm rich voice of melodious quality, ‘I bid you welcome to our Domain, Admiral.’ I see a man with delicate features and with the etching of years upon his face. He is seated at a long table. He motions me to sit down in one of the chairs. After I am seated, he places his fingertips together and smiles. He speaks softly again, and conveys the following.
“We have let you enter here because you are of noble character and well-known on the Surface World, Admiral.”
“Surface World?”, I half-gasp under my breath!
“Yes,” the Master replies with a smile, “you are in the domain of the Arianni, the Inner World of the Earth. We shall not long delay your mission, and you will be safely escorted back to the surface and for a distance beyond. But now, Admiral, I shall tell you why you have been summoned here. Our interest rightly begins just after your race exploded the first atomic bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. It was at that alarming time we sent our flying machines, the “Flugelrads”, to your surface world to investigate what your race had done. That is, of course, past history now, my dear Admiral, but I must continue on. You see, we have never interfered before in your race’s wars, and barbarity, but now we must, for you have learned to tamper with a certain power that is not for Man, namely, that of atomic energy. Our emissaries have already delivered messages to the powers of your world, and yet they do not heed. Now you have been chosen to be witness here that our world does exist. You see, our Culture and Science is many thousands of years beyond your race, Admiral.”
I interrupted, “But what does this have to do with me, Sir?”
The Master’s eyes seemed to penetrate deeply into my mind, and after studying me for a few moments he replied, “Your race has now reached the point of no return, for there are those among you who would destroy your very World rather than relinquish their power as they know it…”
I nodded, and the Master continued, “In 1945 and afterward, we tried to contact your race, but our efforts were met with hostility, our Flugelrads were fired upon. Yes, even pursued with malice and animosity by your fighter planes. So, now, I say to you, my son, there is a great storm gathering in your World, a black fury that will not spend itself for many years. There will be no answer in your Arms, there will be no safety in your Science. It may rage on until every flower of your culture is trampled, and all Human things are leveled in vast chaos. Your recent War was only a prelude of what is yet to come for your race. We here see it more clearly with each hour..do you say I am mistaken?”
“No,” I answer, “it happened once before, the Dark Ages came and they lasted for more than five hundred years.”
“Yes, my son,” replied the Master, “the Dark Ages that will come now for your race will cover the Earth like a pall, but I believe that some of your race will live through the storm, beyond that, I cannot say. We see at a great distance a new world stirring from the ruins of your race, seeking its lost and legendary treasures, and they will be here, my son, safe in our keeping. When that time arrives, we shall come forward again to help revive your culture and your race. Perhaps, by then, you will have learned the futility of war and its strife…and after that time, certain of your culture and science will be returned for your race to begin anew. You, my son, are to return to the Surface World with this message…..”

With these closing words, our meeting seemed at an end. I stood for a moment as in a deam….but, yet, I knew this was reality, and for some strange reason I bowed slightly, either out of respect or humility, I do not know which.
Suddenly, I was again aware that the two beautiful Hosts who had brought me here were again at my side. “This way, Admiral,” motioned one. I turned once more before leaving and looked back toward the Master. A gentle smile was etched on his delicate and ancient face. ‘Farewell, my son,’ he spoke, then he gestured with a lovely, slender hand a motion of peace and our meeting was truly ended.
Quickly, we walked back through the great door of the Master’s chamber and once again entered into the elevator. The door slid silently downward and we were at once going upward. One of my hosts spoke again, “We must now make haste, Admiral, as the Master desires to delay you no longer on your scheduled timetable and you must return with his message to your race.”
I said nothing. All of this was almost beyond belief, and once again my thoughts were interrupted as we stopped. I entered the room and was again with my Radioman. He had an anxious expression on his face. As I approached, I said, “It is all right, Howie, it is all right.”
The two beings motioned us toward the awaiting conveyance, we boarded, and soon arrived back at the aircraft. The engines were idling and we boarded immediately. The whole atmosphere seemed charged now with a certain air of urgency. After the cargo door was closed the aircraft was immediately lifted by that unseen force until we reached an altitude of 2700 feet. Two of the aircraft were alongside for some distance guiding us on our return way. I must state here, the airspeed indicator registered no reading, yet we were moving along at a very rapid rate.
2.15 Hours – A radio message comes through. “We are leaving you now, Admiral, your controls are free. Auf Wiedersehen!!!!”
We watched for a moment as the flugelrads disappeared into the pale blue sky. The aircraft suddenly felt as though caught in a sharp downdraft for a moment. We quickly recovered the control. We do not speak for some time, each man has his thoughts….
Entry in Flight Log continues:
2.20 Hours – We are again over vast areas of ice and snow, and approximately 27 minutes from Base Camp. We radio them, they respond. We report all conditions normal…normal. Base Camp expresses relief at our re-established contact.
3.00 Hours – We land smoothly at Base Camp. I have a mission…..

March 11, 1947. I have just attended a Staff Meeting at the Pentagon. I have stated fully my discovery and the message from the Master. All is duly recorded. The President has been advised. I am now detained for several hours (six hours, thirty- nine minutes, to be exact.) I am interviewed intently by Top Security Forces and a medical team. It was an ordeal!!!! I am placed under strict control via the National Security provisions of this United States of America. I am ORDERED TO REMAIN SILENT IN REGARD TO ALL THAT I HAVE LEARNED, ON THE BEHALF OF HUMANITY!!! Incredible! I am reminded that I am a Military Man and I must obey orders.
30/12/56 – Final Entry:
These last few years elapsed since 1947 have not been kind…I now make my final entry in this singular diary. In closing, I must state that I have faithfully kept this matter secret as directed all these years. It has been completely against my values of moral right. Now, I seem to sense the long night coming on and this secret will not die with me, but as all truth shall, it will triumph and so it shall.
This can be the only hope for Mankind. I have seen the truth and it has quickened my spirit and has set me free! I have done my duty toward the monstrous military industrial complex. Now, the long night begins to approach, but there shall be no end. Just as the long night of the Arctic ends, the brilliant sunshine of Truth shall come again….and those who are of darkness shall fall in it’s Light. FOR I HAVE SEEN THAT LAND BEYOND THE POLE, THAT CENTER OF THE GREAT UNKNOWN.
