A woman whose father was on the flight told the television station the pilot announced over the intercom the plane hit two birds and that one had become stuck inside a turbine. Passengers were told to stay on the plane after it landed, but were moved to other flights when damage was determined to be more extensive than first thought, the woman said. The incident comes just days after an Atlantic Southeast Airlines flight from Atlanta to Arkansas was forced to make an emergency landing after hitting a large flock of birds. No one was hurt in the April 1 flight, but there was significant damage to the plane’s nose. At least one dead crane was protruding from the aircraft when it landed. Once the pilot is found, the next task is figuring out what went wrong to cause it. "We have already started an investigation into this mishap, but we are very early in this investigation. For the next several weeks, a trained safety investigation board will collect and protect evidence from the scene and gather and analyze all relevant data with the specific purpose of determining the cause so we can prevent future mishaps," said O'Shaughnessy. The crash happened about 7:30 p.m. as the plane attempted a landing at Livingston County Airport in Howell Township, Tony Molinaro, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration's Chicago regional office. The airport is about 45 miles west-northwest of Detroit. No one on the ground was hurt, Howell Area Fire Chief Andy Pless told the Livingston County Daily Press & Argus. He said two men, ages 70 and 43, were aboard. The home's owner, Tom O'Connell, was inside when the accident happened. "I looked up and saw a plane coming right at the bedroom window," O'Connell told WJBK-TV. He said the plane was still under power, and the pilot seemed to be trying to steer away when the plane hit the house's brick wall. "I jumped up, dialed 911, grabbed a fire extinguisher and came out," O'Connell said. The plane was a Thorp T18, Molinaro said. He said he didn't immediately have information on the plane's itinerary and whether the lansing attempt was planned or an emergency. The plane was built in 1982 and was registered as owned by a resident of Wayne County's Canton Township, a western Detroit suburb, according to FAA records. The FAA classified the single-engine, fixed-wing plane as experimental and said it was "amateur built." The FAA was sending inspectors to the scene of the accident. Molinaro said the National Transportation Safety Board would lead the investigation. No fire was reported after the crash, but fuel leaking from the plane did force rescuers back for a time. Michigan State Police assisted authorities at the scene, Sheriff Bob Bezotte said.
